Small Business Passport Supports 17 Women-Owned Memphis Shops

It's back! The Small Business Passport includes discounts for each shop and a map to encourage Memphians to shop local and women-owned just in time for the holidays.

The holiday season is upon us and if you’re in need of gift ideas or just everyday needs, you can easily refer to the new Small Business Passport.

Seventeen area shop owners have come together to help raise awareness about their businesses and to support the growth of women-owned businesses in the city through this passport initiative.

Each business is offering a special deal when shoppers with the passport make a purchase from now through December 31, 2024. Passports can be picked up at any participating shop. Shoppers collect a passport at one of the participating shops and get it stamped at every store they visit.

There are three easy ways to get a passport stamp. Participants may pick one or do all three!

  • Visit a participating business and make a purchase. Each business will offer an additional gift or incentive with a qualifying purchase starting Nov. 1.
  • Post about and tag a participating business on social media and show it to that business.
  • Leave a Google review about a participating business and show it to that business.

Once a passport is completed, turn it into the last visited store to be entered into a grand prize drawing. The last day to complete the passport is Dec. 31. Three grand prize winners will be picked at random and announced on January 13, 2025.

The idea originated in 2023 with Whitney Winkler, artist and shopkeeper at Whitney Winkler Art in the Broad Ave. Arts District, after a quiet day in her store.

"I just remember having a hard day, and thinking, 'Surely I am not alone in both the highs and lows I feel as a brick and mortar entrepreneur.” She added, "It felt vulnerable to reach out at first, but after our first meeting, I knew we all were going to be so much better together."

In its first year, 3,400 passports were handed out. For 2024, ARCHd again designed the super chic passports. They no longer have a storefront and thus are not participating in this year's passport despite playing such a pivotal role in its first year success. You can give them some love on their website here.

Hello! I'm Jalyn Souchek, the Director of Content for I Love Memphis Blog! I love calling the 901 home. When I'm not running the blog you can find me cheering on the Grizzlies, at a concert, exploring a new restaurant or kicking back at one of our breweries. I hope you'll love experiencing Memphis with me.

Build your perfect Memphis meal:

I love to eat so if I were to have only one meal left.. I’m going all out. I’d start with an app of Gumbo Fries from Blue City Cafe or Bayou Fries from Chef Tam, wings from Good Fortune or Central’s (honey gold and Jamaican Jerk), potato salad from Fat Larry’s, side of bbq spaghetti from Bar-B-Q Shop, and fried okra from Soul Fish. All paired with a Beale Street Brewing Space Age Sippin’.

Your most memorable Memphis moment:

College GameDay on Beale Street. That was an electric and perfect morning. I was still working in news then and was able to take it in up close and on the stage at some points. The fun and joy of everyone down there that morning is unbeatable.
