Boshi Botanicals is Memphis’ first Zero-Waste Store to Open

Dedicated to making eco-conscious products like soaps and bath bombs, Boshi Botanicals is the first zero-waste store to open in Memphis.

Boshi Botanicals, located inside Chickasaw Oaks, celebrated its grand opening in February 2024. Inside the store you’ll find everything from herbal soaps, beauty and body care products, deodorants, hand soaps, and more.

Wondering where to start when shopping at Boshi Botanicals? Founder and CEO Becky Beloit said a good place to begin is with her soaps and other in-house products they make.

Other products she loves to promote are their Root & Splendor laundry soap (which just received verification from the Environmental Working Group), Little Seed Farm deodorant that’s available in starter jars and in bulk, Leaf Shave Razors and Huppy Toothpaste Tabs.

“All of those are great products to start swapping into your routine,” she said.

To be a zero-waste store means Boshi Botanical researches and stocks products that help shoppers reduce their reliance on single-use plastics including bulk refills of products being available.

“We encourage customers to bring in their own containers for the refills and actually give points which can add up to money off when you do,” Beloin said. “We also have a free jar bank and jars for purchase if you don’t have your own containers. We also carry plastic-free swaps, such as dryer balls, beeswax wraps, unpaper towels, plantable seed cards and more.”

Beloin said they also prioritize sustainability in their operations by putting purchased items in canvas bags (and give you more points for bringing it or another bag back in) and repurposing boxes and packaging as a just a few examples.

"It is our goal to not just set an example, but to also practice what we preach,” she said said.

For Beloin, her story is a case of what happens when life gives you lemons. In June of 2022, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The next year would be spent in treatment.

“I turned to soap making as a form of art therapy and a way to control the products my family and I were using on our bodies,” she said. “I quickly discovered how expensive of a hobby soap making can be and how fast the bars of soap pile up.”

She turned to selling the products she made which were well-received. Then she launched a website and began selling at art fairs before doing a pop-up show in July of 2023 at Chickasaw Oaks which led to falling in love with the space where she would soon open her first retail store.

“To me, opening the first zero-waste store in Memphis is giving the city the gift of a place where consumers can shop sustainably knowing we’ve gone down all the rabbit holes to look for the products we personally trust to be good for people and good for the planet,” she said.

At the store, she hopes that not only do shoppers discover new products they love but that it inspires conversation and small (or big) changes in how Memphians shop. She said Boshi Botanicals is judgment-free and they encourage mindful consumption.

Build your perfect Memphis meal:

I love to eat so if I were to have only one meal left.. I’m going all out. I’d start with an app of Gumbo Fries from Blue City Cafe or Bayou Fries from Chef Tam, wings from Good Fortune or Central’s (honey gold and Jamaican Jerk), potato salad from Fat Larry’s, side of bbq spaghetti from Bar-B-Q Shop, and fried okra from Soul Fish. All paired with a Beale Street Brewing Space Age Sippin’.

Your most memorable Memphis moment:

College GameDay on Beale Street. That was an electric and perfect morning. I was still working in news then and was able to take it in up close and on the stage at some points. The fun and joy of everyone down there that morning is unbeatable.
