I love visiting locally-owned specialty shops, because you’re sure to find something that’s unique and one of a kind. A new place that I’ve discovered is Penn Home & Design Co, a candle brand and gift shop located in Chickasaw Oaks. In addition to the gift shop and candle pouring workshop component, owner Christan Penn is also an interior designer and offers design services to those looking to create a beautiful space in their home.
Open to the public since June 2022, Penn Home & Design Co. creates all-natural Coco Soy Candles, terrazzo planters, and other home goods. The space is airy yet cozy and aesthetically pleasing, and if you’re a plant owner, you’ll love all of the cute “plant daddy/lady” mugs, books and other gifts they keep stocked.

Why Chickasaw Oaks for your first location?
I have always loved this building. Whenever our family had the chance, we would stop by, grab a croissant at La Baguette and then wander through the shops. When you step inside Chickasaw Oaks, you almost feel like you've been transported to a small European town. It's enchanting.
What inspired the concept of the gift shop?
The candles. It was always about giving our customers the opportunity to shop our candles throughout the week, and not just at festivals. Adding other carefully sourced products has been a bonus. The shop also gave us the opportunity to host candle pouring classes and bring people together in a new way.
What do you feel sets Penn Home & Design Co. apart from other gift shops?
I want our customers to feel a sense of warmth when they step through the doors. It's not just about getting a sale. We want to be in community with our customers. It's also important for us to give back. That's why we partner with organizations that support housing families here in Memphis.
What’s your favorite part about owning Penn Home & Design Co.?
As much as I would love to say making candles (which is SO much fun), it's people - forming new relationships with customers and other business owners here in Memphis. It's truly the best. I've never loved a job more.
Any fun upcoming events we should know about?
We have our new Fall and Winter scents coming out soon, and we are really excited about those lines! You can also find us at the Downtown Farmer's Market (check our website for our specific dates).
