40+ Ways To Stay Cool In Memphis This Summer
40+ Ways To Stay Cool In Memphis This Summer
It's almost officially summer, and Memphis weather has not been shy about it. Like, at all. It's just a teensy bit sweltering. Personally I'm covered in mosquito bites and have already entered the perma-sweating stage.
The good news is that there are some easy ways to get through it without staying completely indoors until November. Read on to find out ways to escape (or embrace) the heat.
Get a frozen treat.
Memphis knows how to make a delicious, icy-cold, frozen treat (with or without booze). There are so many options, but here's a quick list.
- Jerry's Sno Cones
- La Michoacana paletas and ice cream
- MEMPops popsicles
- I Love Waffle Cream waffles + ice cream
- Sweet Noshings ice cream and milkshakes
- Sugar Ghost bubble tea and ice cream
- Hernando's "The Dip" (aka Velvet Cream) for sno cones, shake, and ice cream
- Hernando's Area 51 ice cream
- Sweet Magnolia Gelato in Crosstown
- Slider Inn's Jameson whiskey slushie
- I Love Juice bar smoothies and juices
- Boozy milkshakes from The Arcade
Enjoy a Memphis patio
If you suffer from patio addiction despite the heat, there are a few spots that have gone out of their way with misters and fans to make their patio a little more palatable (subject to change, call ahead to confirm seating availability, hours, and if the misters or fans are on.)
- Slider Inn
- Bayou
- Aldo's in midtown
- Celtic Crossing
- Loflin Yard
I'm looking for more. Let me know if you know of any patios with great fans and misters. Click here for a full list of places to enjoy patios in Memphis (including info about which ones are Fido-friendly).
Head to a Memphis museum
Get thee to air conditioning! ALL HOURS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITH NO NOTICE I'M SORRY BUT YOU HAVE TO CALL AHEAD
- Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic Art
- Blues Hall of Fame
- National Civil Rights Museum
- Stax
- Rock 'n' Soul
- Sun Studio
- Museum of Science and History (Pink Palace)
Play inside
There are plenty of places to play inside that the kids (or kids-at-heart) especially will love.
Main Event and Dave and Buster's are two good options for arcades and games. Try laser tag and arcade games at Golf 'n' Games on Summer, indoor trampolines at SkyZone or Jumping World USA, and tons of activities like arcade games, go-carts, and laser tag at Incredible Pizza in Cordova.
Get In The Water
You can try several public parks in Memphis that have either public pools or splash parks. Here's a list.
- Peabody Park
- the Children's Museum
- Shelby Farms Park
- if you're a member of the Kroc Center in Midtown, they have a pretty sweet indoor pool and outdoor splash park.
- Memphis Zoo will open a splash park at some point (costs extra in addition to admission)
- Check out The B-Side which is inside the Minglewood Hall complex in midtown. They opened late 2018 and have plenty of live shows from local bands, plus friendly bartenders and fun snacks.
- The Green Room at Crosstown Arts is inside the Crosstown Concourse building, and they have a truly diverse, eclectic lineup of music and DJs most days of the week. Stop in that Art Bar while you're there, too.
- Hi Tone Cafe has a wide range of chill shows, comedy nights, open mics, and drag shows happening in both the upstairs and downstairs spaces.
