The Pie Folks Bakery Will Make You Slap Yo Mama!

Don’t get flustered by that headline — it’s just a Southern figure of speech! The chocolate pie from The Pie Folks is called the “Slap Yo Mama” because it’s so darn good. 

The Pie Folks: A Memphis Area Pie Institution 

The Pie Folks have been around for years, won plenty of awards, and they’re well known to locals. They originally opened in Olive Branch, then moved to Germantown, but have been in Cordova since 2016. I finally made the trip out there to try them for myself and I was totally charmed. 

The unassuming strip mall location is your first clue that this is going to be good. Actually, this whole bit of Germantown Parkway has some so-called hidden gems of Midsouth eats include Le Delights, El Mero Taco, Tannor Grill, and a La Michoacana location. I’ve heard good things about Friday Tuna and Green Bamboo, too. 

But back to pies!

Chocolate Pie and Lemon Ice Box Pie

The Pie Folks is homey, with worship music emanating from a boom box, a display case of cupcakes, and a colorful chalkboard menu up on the wall boasting about twenty different flavors of pie including the Company Iz Coming Coconut Pie, the Tato Patch Sweet Potato Pie, the Mammaw’s Apple Pie, and the other famous one—the Go Ape Banana Cream Pie. There’s also a City Slicker New York cheesecake and an egg custard.

A friendly man appeared from the back and I told him it was my first time visiting. He was sure to tell me about the first-timers free sample of the Slap Yo Mama, but I was ready to commit. I chose a slice of that one and a slice of the lemon ice box pie. The chef, Audrey Anderson brought them both out on a tray. All the recipes are hers that she’s developed from years of experimentation. (Read more from the Flyer.)

You can get a whole pie, a half pie, or a slice. Whole pie prices range from about $20 to $24, the half pies are about $10, and the slices are $3.99. You cannot get dessert for these prices hardly anywhere. A whole pie for $20 feels unheard of these days. They also offer a gluten free Slap Yo Mama chocolate pie for $28.99. 

Best I can tell, the daily flavors rotates and are available for walk-ins or ordering ahead, but if you want to get something rom teh bigger list of flavors you do need to order ahead. Check out the menu and order info here. They recommend calling and can't guarantee online or email orders.

Tasting Some of the Best Pies - and they have a gluten free option!

I tasted both pies, then took the rest home to share. Both were tasty, clearly homemade and the rich chocolate slice had some wonderfully light whipped cream on top. The Slap Yo Mama pie didn’t last the night, but the lemon ice box pie stood up to a day in the fridge. I was expecting a stiff meringue topping which is not my favorite, but this also had the whipped cream. I want to try some other flavors!

Pie Folks used to be in Olive Branch where I would eat their pies all the time. I can vouch for them having the best pies I have ever eaten! The crazy thing is, ALL their flavors are awesome. My favorite was their Chocolate.

Awesome. Important question: is the keylime pie the kind with a puddinglike filling similar to lemon meringue pie, or the kind with a thicker consistency closer to cheesecake? I prefer the latter but the picture makes it look like the former. Sounds worth a try either way though, and maybe it can make me rethink my preference. Or I could just try the best chocolate pie you've ever had.

The Slap Yo Mama was awesome! I loved it. So glad I bought a Groupon to here. (If you have the groupon, it's not good for whole pies so get slices of a couple to try! Though, I HIGHLY recommend the chocolate!)

I am so glad you chose The Pie Folks to highlight. All of the pies are great but the Slap Yo Momma pie is excellent. My son loves it so much, we served at his wedding. His birthday was March 12th & I went out in the the snow to buy 2 pies. One that was all his & one to share.
