Finally Trying the Birria Pizza from Taco Cat

When people started posting about this food truck meal I knew I had to give it a try. Not only was it something I've never heard of before but it looked *fire emojis*.

It was my mission a few weeks ago to visit Taco Cat food truck determined to try the Birria Pizza I had seen so many posting about.

Taco Cat, a Mexican food truck as cute as its name, can be found in the parking lot of the Exxon gas station in Cordova (610 N Germantown Pkwy). They have a good little set up with a large shaded canopy and bright colored picnic tables to eat at or take it home to enjoy.

I’m fairly certain Taco Cat popularized the birria pizza concept here in Memphis. Other spots have started selling their own too but like all good things -- you go to the root of it to try it.

Birria is a traditional Mexican dish of super juicy beef in a flavorful chile broth. I’m sure there are variations but I believe this is the most common. It can be served as a stew, in tacos, or in this case – pizza form.

Thankfully, I knew exactly what I wanted because I could not find the birria pizza mentioned anywhere on the menu.

I can’t recall the exact price but I remember it being way more affordable. I want to say under $30 with a drink. It also came out quick – but not in that too quick worrisome kind of way.

It’s served up in a big pizza box cut up into eight large slices loaded up with and served with a Consomé broth for dipping and green and red sauce. It’s shaped as a pizza but I think of it more as a giant quesadilla.

You guys – it was so good and so filling. This is a “viral” food moment in Memphis I think is here to stay and so is Taco Cat. It's filling too. You can easily split this with 2-4 people.

Taco Cat is in the process of opening a brick and mortar just around the corner to where the food truck is located. Currently under renovation, the restaurant will be at 1770 N. Germantown Parkway.

Build your perfect Memphis meal:

I love to eat so if I were to have only one meal left.. I’m going all out. I’d start with an app of Gumbo Fries from Blue City Cafe or Bayou Fries from Chef Tam, wings from Good Fortune or Central’s (honey gold and Jamaican Jerk), potato salad from Fat Larry’s, side of bbq spaghetti from Bar-B-Q Shop, and fried okra from Soul Fish. All paired with a Beale Street Brewing Space Age Sippin’.

Your most memorable Memphis moment:

College GameDay on Beale Street. That was an electric and perfect morning. I was still working in news then and was able to take it in up close and on the stage at some points. The fun and joy of everyone down there that morning is unbeatable.
