5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend, 7/8 - 7/10
Happy Friday, Memphis! Here's your weekly shortlist of this weekend's can't-miss events:
1. Memphis Music Launch Showcase, New Daisy, Friday, 6:30 p.m., $5
Three months ago, aspiring musicians, promoters and songwriters gathered to start bands and write and record a song in 48 hours. Tonight, the four bands that came out of the 48-hour launch will perform a final, judged showcase to determine which band will walk away with $5,000 in music industry prizes (studio time, merch, etc.). After the MML bands, a Memphis all-star super group (including Sid Selvidge and Jody Stephens) will play.
2. Mouserocket CD Release Party, Hi-Tone Cafe, Friday, 9 p.m., $7
Local noise-pop band Mouse Rocket is having a release party for their brand new record, Cicada Sounds. Harlan T. Bobo's band, The Fuzz (with Shawn Cripps of Limes) and El Cento will open. According to the giant posters at the Hi-Tone, the show will have some kind of interactive art element, though I'm not entirely sure what that means.
3. Radiohead Live in Prague, Levitt Shell, Friday, 8:47 p.m., free
As part of their concert film series, IndieMemphis is showing "Radiohead Live in Prague" on a big screen at the Levitt Shell tonight. The film is the result of a group of fans who wanted to capture the band's live show from as many angles as possible. The oddly specific film start time corresponds with the sunset, but get there early to grab a good spot.
4. Black Arts Symposium, Hattiloo Theatre, Saturday, 10 a.m., free
Memphis' Black repertory theater is hosting a day of free workshops and discussions about the local Black arts community. Topics will include the arts in education, non-profits and high art vs. community art. The seminars are free and open to everyone, but there's limited space. To reserve a spot, call 525-0009.
5. Benefit for Ofc. Tim Warren, B.B. King's, Sunday, 8 p.m., $5
There's going to be a benefit show on Sunday night for Memphis Police Department officer Tim Warren, who was killed in the line of duty last weekend. The Zack Mack Duo and the Patrick Dodd band will play, and all of the proceeds from the door will benefit the Timothy Warren Memorial Fund.
If none of these events are your thing, check the calendar for plenty more. As always, no matter what you do this weekend, I hope you have a great one.
