5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 6/10 - 6/12
Happy Friday, Memphis! You need things to do this weekend. I have suggestions. Here are my top-five picks for the next 72 hours (some of them free):
1. FedEx St. Jude Classic, Southwind, Friday - Sunday, all day, $35
The PGA tour is in Memphis this weekend for the annual FedEx St. Jude Classic. Grab a Pronto Pup, keep quiet and watch master golfers take on the course at Southwind all weekend long. The players include veterans like John Daly playing against young guns like Colt Knost. The event is a huge annual fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (last year, it raised half a million dollars for the hospital).
2. Thalia Sanchez and Mariachi America, Levitt Shell, Friday, 7:30 p.m., free
Grab a blanket, pack up your cooler and come to Overton Park tonight for an evening of free live music. Thalia Sanchez is a rising star in the mariachi world, and a favorite of the Memphis Latin community. You're allowed to bring blankets and lawn chairs, as well as your own snacks and drinks to the family-friendly show.
3. Hattiloo Theatre Block Party, Hattiloo Theatre, Saturday, 4 p.m. - 8 p.m., free
Hattiloo, Memphis' Black repertory theatre, is having their annual block party on Saturday afternoon. It's going to be held in the parking lot behind the theatre (on Monroe, about a block west of Sun Studio). The free event will feature some of Memphis' most exciting neo-soul, funk, folk and hip-hop artists as well as spoken work performances.
4. 2nd Annual Prom for All, Doubletree Hotel downtown, Saturday, 8 p.m., $50 per person / $80 per couple
If you missed prom the first time around (or really want to relive that magical night), you'll love the 2nd annual Prom for All. The prom (which is a fundraiser for the Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center) have prom pictures, a DJ, and (unlike your high school prom), alcoholic beverages for sale. The prom is 18+ and all are welcome.
5. Mr. Quintron and Miss Pussycat, Hi-Tone Cafe, Saturday, 9 p.m., $10
New Orleans-based swamp rocker Mr. Quintron and his lovely assistant, Miss Pussycat, are returning to the Hi-Tone this weekend with their homemade instruments, techno touches and puppet-based morality plays. They're on tour in support of their new record "Sucre du Suavage", which was released by Memphis-based Goner Records. Come prepared to dance.
As always, if none of these events are your thing, you can find plenty more on the calendar. No matter what you do this weekend, I hope you have a great time.
