(In honor of Elvis Week 2011, I’m having an Elvis-themed Monday. All day, immersed in the world of Elvis – checking out his favorite places, eating where he ate, and doing some of the things he did in an attempt to find out why after so many years, Elvis is still so fascinating for so many people.) I was clearly in Monday mode when I got dressed this morning. I left the house in a plain gray t-shirt, cuffed jeans and my sneakers. That's not very Elvis of me.

When I headed to the Arcade to start the 24 Hours of Elvis, I got a little bit nervous that the restaurant's Elvis booth wouldn't be available.

(Note: In honor of Elvis week, I'm going to spend Monday of day next week living like the king. Think of this as sort of a preview.) Memphis' Sun Studio launched the recording careers of many music legends. Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, etc. all got their start recording in Sun's famous one-room studio.

I met Memphian no. 220, Shannan Fisher, when we were both newbies at Memphis Roller Derby.

January 8 is Elvis' birthday. In honor of the day, I made one of his favorite snacks: a peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwich. Elvis was known for eating tons of these crazy Southern sandwiches.

Chilean miner Edison Pena in the lobby of the Peabody Hotel. Pena, who is a huge Elvis fan, was given a trip to visit Memphis during Elvis week by Graceland. The trip included private tours of Graceland and Sun Studio, a luxury suite at the Peabody and a shopping spree at Lansky Bros.

Waiting for the Last Chance Elvis Tribute Artist Contest to start Saturday night at the Hard Rock Cafe was similar to waiting for a Tiger basketball game to start. There were a ton of people, many in some sort of Elvis-themed clothing. There was clapping. And every time a clip of the '68 Comeback Special or "Aloha from Hawaii" was played, people went crazy.
