As much as I love what Gibson's Donuts has to offer at 2 a.m., there's one donut that - though perfect for the time - never seems to be in the case. But during the day, the world's greatest 2 a.m. food is available by the dozen. Friends, behold the maple bacon donut:

Bryant's sausage biscuit is a simple thing, just a thick slab of sausage sandwiched in a biscuit. But much like fine scotch, Phil Spector songs and intuitive web design, simple things aren't necessarily easy to pull off.

Update: I'm very sad to say that Rock n Dough's East Memphis location is closed. They still have locations in Germantown and Jackson, Tennessee.  In an attempt to break out of a brunch rut, I've been on a mission to try new places for that all-important late morning/early afternoon weekend meal. The stylish mural painted on the brick wall inside Tamp & Tap downtown offers guests the option to Grind or Unwind, which is an appropriate message for a coffee and beer concept. If you’re wondering about the name: the tamp is the metal thing for pressing grounds to make espresso, and the tap is of course, a beer tap.

Updated January 2019 Let me begin this post with a moment of silence for Frank's Deli. For years, I enjoyed lunch from the sandwich shop and convenience store at the corner of South Main and Vance downtown. Sadly, Frank's and its delicious, beautiful sandwiches closed circa 2014. All is not lost, though, because out of the rubble we have ourselves one Bedrock Eats & Sweets.
