This coming Thursday September 1 is a big day in Memphis! Not only is it the day of the huge 901 Day event at AutoZone Park (fun, food, entertainment, fireworks, free!) it's also the grand opening of the "Heart of the Park" new stuff at Shelby Farms Park. I took a tour of the new and improved areas of the park this week. Here are some photos.

The Memphis Botanic Garden has announced their 2016 Live at the Garden Concert Series lineup. Here's who you can see this summer and early fall in Memphis:  

Did you ever go to Newby's? I did. In college mostly, and mostly for live music. It wasn't my regular spot, but I know it was for many people. By all accounts the bar, restaurant, and venue is a Memphis institution. It is, after all, the self-described "college bar you never graduate from".

More than a year after its closing, Newby's in Memphis will reopen next Tuesday, January 26. I stopped by last week to take a peek and talk with co-owner Larry Thompson.

This weekend (October 17 - 18, 2015) is the second annual Memphis Outdoor Festival. Held at Shelby Farms, this two day event features mountain bike and trail races, live music and beer, food trucks, yoga, dock dogs, kids' activities, and more. Prices for activities range from $10 for yoga up to $65 for the "MOFMAN" challenge.

This weekend in East Memphis, the Memphis Urban League Young Professionals (MULYP) will host their third annual Empowerment Conference at the Hilton hotel. A few dozen local industry leaders will serve as panelists and speakers over three days of seminars, parties, and events.

Ed. Note: Mac's is closed, permanently. Mac's Burgers is the latest restaurant in Memphis to join the gourmet burger/mac 'n' cheese trend. While I admit I had to chuckle at a burger place called "Mac's" with a red and yellow logo, my friend and I went in with an open mind. Mac's is in the remodeled former location of Dan McGuinness in East Memphis.
