Why Loving Memphis Isn't Enough (Unless You Do Something to Back It Up)

Ed. Note: This post was written by Kerry Crawford.

On Friday, my friend Shannon sent me an article from Next City called "Loving My City Enough to Fight for It". It's mostly about author Anne Trubeck's adopted home of Cleveland, Ohio, but a lot of her points can (and should) be applied to Memphis.

Monday News Update: Sloth Boat Edition

I'm not going to lie: we've Memphis' official slow news point, that time between the end of May and the beginning of August when not a whole lot happens. But, we must soldier on with today's Memphis news update.

Today, we've got a some stormy weather (but no idea how much), the return of the city's unofficial splash park, a chance to vote on the Tiger's new home court and - because it's Monday - a sloth on a boat.

Eat this: Gibson's Watermelon Donut

Summer has come to Gibson's: they're selling donuts with bright pink watermelon flavored icing. The watermelon donut doesn't seem like a thing that should work. There's something kind of strange about combining the sweet, yeasty goodness of a donut with a watermelon's sweet, light, watery taste. At the same though, I am a big fan of both donuts and watermelons. So I bought one.

Photo Gallery: Sons of Mudboy at Minglewood Hall

On Wednesday nights, a rotating cast of musicians (including, but not limited to Luther and Cody Dickinson, Paul Taylor, Steve Selvidge and Al Gamble) known as the Sons of Mudboy take the stage at Mingelwood Hall's 1884 Lounge.

The band, named in homage to Luther and Cody's father's (Jim Dickinson) band, Mudboy and the Neutrons, will play this homestand at least through June and July, and if we're lucky and the Minglewood site's optimism holds, forever.
