Step Back in Time at the Renaissance Faire: A Magical Event with a Purpose

Hear ye, hear ye! Mark your calendars for August 17, 2024, as Wiseacre on Broad Avenue in Memphis transforms into a fantastical world of knights, maidens, and medieval marvels.

Beginning at 1 PM, this enchanting Renaissance Faire promises an afternoon of revelry, music, dancing, and thrilling medieval battles, all set against the backdrop of a noble cause. Be sure to bring some school supplies to donate–more on that important aspect later! Let's get into the event details first.

A Medieval Celebration Awaits

Prepare to be transported to an era of chivalry and charm. The Grand Renaissance Faire is an all-ages event where you can immerse yourself in the splendor of the past. Dress in your finest Renaissance attire—be it a regal gown, a dashing doublet, or a brave knight’s armor—and join a day filled with:

  • Live Music and Dancing: Enjoy the melodies and rhythms that will have you tapping your feet and twirling in the spirit of the Renaissance.
  • Artisan Shops: Browse through a variety of stalls featuring unique crafts, jewelry, and treasures that echo the craftsmanship of the medieval period.
  • Exciting Medieval Battles: Witness epic duels and heroic feats as knights battle for glory in thrilling, family-friendly combat. Remember our feature on the Memphis Armored Fight Club? They’ll be there competing and you can hop into the ring yourself.

Event founder and organizer Ashley Riley said a Renaissance Faire-themed event is a unique way to bring community together.

"Renaissance Faires provide an opportunity for people to escape everyday life and indulge in playful, imaginative fun—something rare for adults," she said. "These events attract people from all walks of life, fostering a sense of unity and shared joy."

The event will also feature free face painting, enchanting mermaids, and a queen who will knight guests and take pictures.

A Faire with a Purpose

While the faire itself is a celebration of history and fantasy, it also serves a noble cause. This event doubles as a school supply drive to support students experiencing homelessness in Memphis.

Riley said her inspiration for starting the event started while working for a EverDriven, a company that provides transportation for students experiencing homelessness and students with special needs, which led her to become a certified homeless liaison.

"During my frequent meetings with other homeless liaisons across the Mid-South, I often hear about the struggles of providing school supplies, which frequently come out of teachers' own pockets," she said. "The number of students experiencing homelessness in Memphis has doubled over the past year. As a Memphis native and local McKinney-Vento and Homeless Liaison, I am committed to ensuring that transportation and essential school supplies are no longer barriers to education for these students."

Attendees are encouraged to bring donations of school supplies—such as notebooks, pencils, and backpacks—to make a tangible difference in our community.

Admission: Free!

Yes, you read that correctly! Admission to the Renaissance Faire is absolutely free but consider giving. Your donations will help provide essential supplies to children in need, ensuring they have the tools they need to succeed in school.

Build your perfect Memphis meal:

I love to eat so if I were to have only one meal left.. I’m going all out. I’d start with an app of Gumbo Fries from Blue City Cafe or Bayou Fries from Chef Tam, wings from Good Fortune or Central’s (honey gold and Jamaican Jerk), potato salad from Fat Larry’s, side of bbq spaghetti from Bar-B-Q Shop, and fried okra from Soul Fish. All paired with a Beale Street Brewing Space Age Sippin’.

Your most memorable Memphis moment:

College GameDay on Beale Street. That was an electric and perfect morning. I was still working in news then and was able to take it in up close and on the stage at some points. The fun and joy of everyone down there that morning is unbeatable.
