About the 2024 Stax Music Academy's Summer Music Experience

This summer, immerse yourself in the rich musical history of Stax Records during the iconic "Soul Explosion" period at Stax Music Academy's special camp. Our unique theme guides students through a journey of musical discovery, paying homage to the extraordinary catalog of music that defined an era. The Summer Music Experience will take place June 3 – June 29th, 2024, and is open to all 6th-12th graders.

Mindfulness

We believe in nurturing the whole person, so each day will begin with mindfulness exercises to help students regulate their emotions and work together productively. In addition to mindfulness, students will delve into the ins and outs of the music business through our Musicology classes.

Musicology

Students will receive valuable musical instruction through group and sectional rehearsals, ensuring a well-rounded and enriching experience. The goal? Our students leave with a better understanding of the music business, a nurtured sense of entrepreneurial spirit, and tools to become more self-sufficient and independent minded in making their own path not just to their musical futures, but also in life. In addition to learning from our team of professionally trained music instructors, SME campers will get to work with local music legends Carla Thomas, Valerie June, and Gary Goin.

Collaborative Learning Experiences

We understand the importance of collaboration and community engagement. That's why we've planned exciting, soulful experiences to foster connections among our students and their community. On the second Friday of the camp, Red Carpet Day will uplift students as the artists they are. And on the third Friday, we'll have a songwriting competition in honor of Les Paul's 109th birthday. These events will inspire creativity and bring our students together in a supportive and exciting atmosphere. This year’s camp will also include a video and film component for budding producers and filmmakers!

Grand Finale Concert

The culmination of our summer program will be the Grand Finale concert at the iconic Overton Park Shell on June 29th. Join us as we celebrate the talents and achievements of our students in a spectacular showcase of music, creativity, and joy. It's an event you won't want to miss!
