Metal Museum

Description:

The Metal Museum hosts a Family Fun Day in conjunction with Repair Days and the annual F.I.R.E. Conference at the Museum. On these days, families can learn about different metalworking processes through educational activities, view our latest exhibitions, and watch as the foundry artists pour molten iron.

Visitors can participate in several free hands-on activities, observe metalsmiths honing their craft, explore our exhibits and browse the Museum Store for adornments, kitchenware and more by artists from around the country.

There’s nothing like watching blacksmiths move steel as easily as clay or watching a foundry crew melt down and pour more than a ton of iron. During F.I.R.E conference, aspiring metalsmiths of all ages and skill levels can try their hand at various processes.

Take time for some family photos on the bluff and be sure to stick around for the big Iron Pour. This intricate process begins with iron melted down in a big furnace called a cupola. Children (and adults) will watch in amazement as the glowing orange molten iron is poured into molds, creating solid pieces as it cools.

🔥 Visitors who want to come away with a one-of-a-kind creation can, for $20, design their own art tile that will be cast at the iron pour. 🔥

So, join us for a day of thrills, spills, and unforgettable memories at the Metal Museum's Family Fun Day!

Four metalworkers wearing personal protective equipment pour hot, liquid metal from a large crucible into several molds lined up on a table. Behind them, a crowd of people watch and take pictures. It is a sunny day and there are trees in the background.
