Everything you need to know before visiting the hidden crystal cave inside a Memphis cemetery.
The Crystal Shrine Grotto is a man-made crystal cave tucked inside Memorial Park Cemetery in East Memphis that is built into the side of a hill, lined with quartz, and filled with hand-sculpted dioramas depicting the life of Christ. It's free to visit, open every day, and one of the more unusual stops you'll find in the city.
Here's what it is, what's inside, and everything you need to know to plan your visit.
A Depression-era masterpiece
The grotto was built between 1935 and 1943 by Mexican folk artist Dionicio Rodriguez, commissioned by Memorial Park's founder, E.C. Hinds. Rodriguez was a master of faux bois, concrete sculpted and stained to look like wood, stone, and other natural materials, and he was famously secretive about how he did it, reportedly destroying the jars of pigment he used so no one could copy his process.
While he worked on the grotto, Rodriguez lived downtown at the Pontotoc Hotel, a building that recently sat vacant and crumbling for years before reopening in 2025 as the boutique Hotel Pontotoc, complete with a basement cocktail bar called The Dame.
Rodriguez built more than the grotto itself. The surrounding meditation garden includes a wooden footbridge, a reflecting pond, a wishing well, concrete "log" benches, and Abraham's Oak, a hollow faux tree that visitors can actually walk through.
What's inside
Step through the grotto's entrance and you're in a cave that runs nearly 60 feet into the hillside, its walls, ceiling, and floor embedded with an estimated five tons of quartz crystal and semi-precious stone. Soft harp music plays throughout the space, and the crystal-lined walls frame a series of dioramas depicting scenes from the life of Christ: the Nativity, the Last Supper, the Resurrection, and others less commonly depicted, all rendered in glowing, otherworldly detail.
It's a lot to take in, and more than one visitor has described the initial effect as intense. Give your eyes a minute to adjust, and take your time. There's a surprising amount of detail packed into a small space.
While you're there
Memorial Park Cemetery is also the final resting place of Isaac Hayes, whose grave sits across the street from the grotto and is worth a quiet visit if you're a music history fan. The grotto grounds themselves are a popular, free backdrop for family portraits, engagement and wedding photos, and graduation pictures, and the cemetery hosts a well-attended Easter sunrise service there each year.
Plan your visit
Where is it? The Crystal Shrine Grotto is on the grounds of Memorial Park Cemetery at 5668 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN 38119. Enter through the Poplar Avenue gate and follow the cemetery road toward the grotto's meditation garden — it's a short drive in from the entrance, not a walk-up storefront.
What are the hours? Cemetery grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset. The Poplar Avenue gate itself is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. There's no separate "grotto schedule" — if the cemetery is open, the grotto is accessible.
Is there an admission fee? No — visiting the grotto is completely free.
Will I have trouble finding it? Possibly. Signage inside the cemetery is minimal, and it's easy to miss the turn if you're not looking for it. Your best bet is to drop a pin on the "Crystal Shrine Grotto" location in Google or Apple Maps and follow that directly, rather than just heading for "Memorial Park Cemetery" and hoping to spot it. If you get turned around, the cemetery office can point you in the right direction — call (901) 302-9980, which is staffed 24/7.
How long should I plan to stay? Most visitors spend 15 to 45 minutes between the grotto interior and the surrounding garden. It's an easy add-on to a morning of Memphis sightseeing rather than a half-day destination on its own.
Is photography allowed? Yes, and it's a favorite spot for local photographers. Please just be mindful that you're on active cemetery grounds, so keep an eye out for services or grieving families and give them space.
Is it kid- and family-friendly? Generally, yes. it's a quick, low-key stop that most kids find fascinating rather than spooky, though the initial darkness and intensity of the cave can catch younger visitors off guard for a moment. Because it sits inside a working cemetery, it's worth a heads-up conversation beforehand if you're visiting with young children.
Should I plan around accessibility needs? The cave floor and garden paths are original to a 1930s-era construction, with some uneven and sloped surfaces, so visitors using wheelchairs or with mobility limitations may want to call ahead to (901) 302-9980 to ask about the terrain before making the trip.
Can I get married or take photos there for an event? Yes. The cemetery says it's a popular having hosted numerous weddings, engagements, and portraits at no cost. Reach out to the cemetery office in advance (Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m., Sat 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m., Sun 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m.) if you're planning a larger session or event so they can help you coordinate around other cemetery activity.
When's the best time to go? Early morning on a weekday tends to be quietest, both for a more peaceful experience and to avoid overlapping with services elsewhere on the grounds.
Who do I contact with questions? Memorial Park Cemetery's main line, (901) 302-9980, is answered 24/7 and is the best number for both general questions and same-day help finding the grotto.

I did not know we had such a hidden gem hidden in Memphis.
This is undoubtedly the most beautiful creation I have ever discovered.
I will take my husband there so we both can view this magnificent masterpiece. The artist/sculptor who created this had a true God given talent.
