Tuesday News Update: BSMF Load-In, RIP Skip Pitts, an Overton Square Lease and a Brick Mystery
Well, everybody, it's officially started - load in for this weekend's Beale Street Music Festival is underway in Tom Lee Park.
So far, the weather forecast is calling for three days of 90 degrees and sunshine, but as a festival veteran, I'm still planning to wear my rain boots just in case.
In other news:
- I'm sad to announce that one of Memphis' soul legends passed away this morning. Charles “Skip” Pitts, who played with the Bo-Keys and is responsible for the dirty wah-wah guitar on Isaac Hayes' "Shaft", was 65.
- Lionel Hollins isn't freaking out about tomorrow, so you shouldn't either.
- In happy Overton Square news, downtown's Local Gastropub is going to open a second location in the newly renovated Yosemite Sam's building (at the corner of Cooper and Madison). I'm not sure when it will open, but a lease has been signed for the 100 year-old building.
- Remember the commemorative bricks with peoples' names on them that were in front of the Pyramid? They're being moved, but no one knows where.
- If you've ever got any tips for things you'd like to see here- think new places to try, events that everyone should know about, local oddities, whatever - I'd love to hear them. Email me.
