Meet Memphian No. 188, Morgan Jon Fox

365 Memphians - Morgan John Fox
Meet Memphian no. 188, filmmaker Morgan Jon Fox. Here, he tells me about his top five movies, what he's been working on and where to find "Hello, My Friend": Name: Morgan Jon Fox Occupation: Filmmaker Hometown: Memphis, Tenn. Neighborhood: Midtown I’m working on: my documentary, "This Is What Love In Action Looks Like". It just had its world premiere, and I am beginning to take it around the world to film festivals, schools, and conferences before finalizing a distribution deal to have it released and available to the public for early 2012.  I'm also writing a new script in collaboration with my dear friend Craig Brewer's local production company, BR2.  Chris Davis of the Memphis Flyer is co-writing. The last thing I ate was: some delicious Stacy's Pita Chips. I’m excited about: finally completing a project I've been working on for more than six years - my summer vegetable garden.  My new turtle.  Eventually being able to legally marry the love of my life, my boyfriend, Declan. The Memphis film scene is: A good group of mostly humble, fun, down to earth, gritty, and genuine folks who are in it for all the right reasons. My desert Island, all-time, top-five movies are: Celebration (Lars Von Trier), Wild Reeds (Andre Techine), Sacrifice (Andrei Tarkovsky), Lean On Me (John Avildsen), and Dead Poets Society (Peter Weir). The movie I just finished is: a feature length documentary about a 16 year-old boy who told his parents he was gay, and they responded by sending him to Love In Action, a faith-based org that pledged "freedom from homosexuality".  The documentary follows the international outrage that ensued, including local protests and a media firestorm. My favorite Memphis secret is: "HELLO MY FRIEND". That's what I call it, but it's really called "Parkway Grill" (at the corner of E. Parkway and Central in the back of the Kwik Shop convenience store).  They have the most delicious hamburgers and veggie burgers and it's really cheap.  The first time I ever went there, one of the owners greeted me with a loud, "Hello my friend, what can I get for you" and I just thought...what an awesome way to greet someone. Not a lot of people even know they serve food in the back of that convenience store, but my friends and I all know it...as "Hello My Friend". When people come from out of town, I always take them to: Otherlands. I love Memphis because: it's a little off and a little backwards in many ways, which is something I kinda like. It keeps things real and grounded. Also, it's my home, and always will be.
