Go To Next Door In Cooper Young: Sweet Grass' Casual Cousin
When chef Ryan Trimm opened Sweet Grass in Cooper Young back in 2010, it instantly became a midtown favorite. It's a neighborhood staple for nice brunches and date nights, amazing oysters, and the arguably the city's favorite charcuterie and cheese plates.
In 2011, Ryan and his team opened Sweet Grass Next Door...literally next door. Years later, the casual cousin of the OG restaurant is just as much of a Cooper Young favorite. In fact, when people say "let's go to Sweet Grass", I always have to clarify which side they mean.
Next Door's space is long and narrow, with a bar running the length of the room. There's a second, long bar in the middle of the room and some tables along the sides and in the back. This second bar makes the spot ideal for sports watching and for bar-sitters like me. There's also a small room in the back of the bar with a giant TV that can be reserved for private-ish parties.
Next Door has a solid drink selection. They've got a large beer case of craft domestics, imports high-gravity beers. The wine list is extensive, and their cocktail ingredients are plentiful. They have both beer and a few wines on tap. They have weekly specials, too.
The food menu at Next Door includes some of the favorites from regular Sweet Grass, as well as some more pub-friendly options (pimento cheese burgers, chicken and waffles, and fried green tomato BLTs have been on the menu in the past).
Sweet Grass Next Door is also known for the butcher's block, a huge plate of cheese and house-cured meats. On one day, the three cheeses were a brie, a slightly sharp sheep's milk cheese and a salty, pungent cheese. The meat side of the platter was loaded with pate, sausage, some sort of creamy version of pork, and spicy slices of pork loaf with pistachios.
Sweet Grass Next Door is open Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. - 'til and on Saturdays and Sunday from 11 a.m. - 'til.
