Stay Stealthy at the Talbot Heirs Guesthouse

There's nothing about the Talbot Heirs Guesthouse that makes it seem like a hotel. First, there's the entrance. It's a nondescript door sandwiched between a restaurant and a convenience store on Second St. It's the sort of door that, unless you're specifically looking for it, you'll miss completely. Talbot Heirs Guesthouse entrance, Memphis, Tenn. The rooms, which are all located on the second floor of the building, are less like hotel rooms and more like studio apartments. You could spend some serious time in these suites - each one has a full kitchen that come stocked with free snacks and water, and some have living rooms. They're all uniquely decorated, and most contain some kind of local art. One of the suites has a framed vintage poster from a Gladys Knight and the Pips show that owner Sandy Franck found in a trunk at her mother's house. Talbot Heirs Guesthouse suite, Memphis, Tenn. Sandy and her husband Tom have operated the guesthouse six years. The Talbot Heirs is independently owned by their daughter, who is a producer on "America's Next Top Model". They see the Talbot Heirs as an alternative to the usual Memphis accommodations. They don't advertise beyond their website, and many of the hotel's guests come to them based on the recommendations of friends. As a result, Tom says, "We seem to get really interesting people." Based on their size and location downtown, I would have thought that rooms at the Talbot Heirs would be a lot more expensive than they are. A typical night's stay runs anywhere from $130 - $270, depending on the day and size of the room. Go There: Talbot Heirs Guesthouse 99 S. Second Street Memphis, TN 38103 (901) 527-9772

Highly recommended! My in-laws used to stay here every time they visited (before we had a guest room). We had so much fun seeing the rooms - each one is unique and decorated in a bright, fun way. I love the hot pink room and the one overlooking 2nd St. that has the famous grand piano in it. A lot also have balconies/patios that almost make the place feel like nawlins...

I used to live in Memphis, now Talbot Heirs is my home away from home. This is the best place to stay downtown period.

Booked a room as part of my Valentines Day weekend, romantic master plan. I'll be back with a review after that.

My wife and I stayed at Talbot Heirs for the week of the International Blues Challenge in February, and could not imagine a better experience anywhere. We were guests of Tom and Sandy - not customers, sharing coffee and conversation with them. We'll definitely stay here again.
