Chocolate Pasta Taste Test
Chocolate Pasta Taste Test
I suppose that when you make your own pasta, you can put whatever you want it.
That said, the handmade chocolate pasta that I picked up at Valenza Pasta this afternoon had me a little confused. What does one eat chocolate pasta with? Is it sweet? Should I put whipped cream on it? When I asked the woman working what exactly I should do with it, she suggested cooking it with some vegetables or mole sauce.
When I opened the package, it smelled like cocoa powder. Not sweet, just kind of dry and chocolatey. The pasta cooks up quickly - it only took about three minutes. For a topping, I followed the pasta chef's advice and sauteed some cucumbers and tomatoes in olive oil.
The verdict? Chocolate pasta is kind of weird.
It wasn't sweet. While it was a bit more savory than plain pasta, it didn't have a heavy chocolate flavor. Since the pasta is handmade, it's a little bit better than anything I've had out of a box in terms of texture, flavor and freshness.
Valenza Pasta sells several varieties of homemade pasta in flavors like cracked pepper, rosemary garlic, and Scarborough Fair (pasta made with parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme). I was impressed with their selection of prepared food, too. They had pizzas, lasagna, ravioli and marinara sauce ready for reheating.

You should try cooking it with a bit of a spicy sauce next time. The Mayans used chile pepper in thier chocolate. The mole would probably be good. However, I cant make a mole and no idea what brands are good!
Interesting... chocolate pasta....going to ponder this one a bit.

I think around $5 per bag of pasta. All of the pasta, pizza and ravioli that we have tried have been VERY tasty.
