And Exactly Awesesome - Greely Myatt and his Student at the Brooks Museum
A few months ago, I stopped by the Brooks Museum to see "and exactly Twenty Years", a retrospective by Memphis artist Greely Myatt.
I started crushing on his work almost immediately after entering the gallery. His sculptures are surprising and funny. I was hugely fond of the ceiling fan that had been modified to spin a bird on a wire instead of regular ceiling fan blades.
Greely Myatt is also responsible for one of my favorite pieces of public art, "Quiltsurround". The giant metal quilts were made from recycled aluminum street signs and cover an unsightly HVAC unit outside of City Hall (facing Front St.)
Currently, Myatt is a professor of art at the University of Memphis. On Thursday at 3 p.m., two of Myatt's students, Kathleen Studabaken and Benton Moss, will be discussing their sculptures that are on exhibit at the Brooks Museum.
Greely Myatt's "and exactly Twenty Years" is on view until Jan. 3. The student exhibition, "From the School of Myatt" will be showing through Dec. 6. You can see "Quiltsurround" outside of City Hall anytime.
