Mi Pueblo Opens in East Memphis

A few of you have asked if I've been to try Mi Pueblo, the new Mexican restaurant in East Memphis yet, and honestly, I have to admit that I didn't know that it was new. The restaurant's awning, signs and patio tables have been set up for what seems like at least a year, but the restauant only officially opened this spring.

I tried it for the first time last night for dinner. Since the weather was so pleasant, I asked if we could sit outside on the narrow upstairs patio. The patio, which gives a scenic view of the Whole Foods parking lot, is covered and well lit.

Don't Be Shy - Try Shang Hai

I've driven past Shang Hai hundreds of times without paying any attention to it. When I did notice it, I sort of wrote it off as another generically sketchy Asian restaurant. Some of these mildly-sketchy looking places are the stuff of local legend - they get praised, talked about and passed around through groups of foodies and friends.

Shang Hai isn't one of those places, but it should be. From the outside, it doesn't look like much - just an angular building sandwiched between an office and a bar with a sign emphatically proclaiming that they serve vegetables.

Get Some Dim Sum at Golden Coast

If you're going to try dim sum at Golden Coast, there are a few rules. Rule number one: bring a friend (or two). Most of the items come in sets of two, three or four - three turnip cakes, for example, or four shrimp dumplings. If you want to try more than two things, you're going to need back up. Rule number two: Don't be scared. Unless you're a dim sum regular, there are going to be some things on the menu that you're not familiar with.
