1.I'm honored to bring you the world premiere of Memphis' own Marcella and Her Lovers new music video for the song "We Rewind" off her most recent EP, The Bronze Age. Take a look and a listen!
The Orpheum's annual Summer Movie series is one of my favorite annual events, and it begins on June 4. The theatre, which is primarily used for Broadway shows returns to its movie house roots on weekends in summer. The air conditioner is cranked up, there are all kinds of pre-show shenanigans (like costume contests, themed cocktails, etc.), and people get very, very into whatever is playing.
Memphis has many awesome arts groups, and one of the most unique is Opera Memphis. You might think of opera as a bit stuffy or for a certain crowd, but that's just not true with Opera Memphis. They make an effort to involve the community and do out-of-the-box things to make this classical art more accessible, like 30 Days of Opera, kid-friendly performances, and Midtown Opera Festival.
"Disney In Concert: Magical Music from the Movies" is a benefit for the MSO, featuring songs from Disney favorites, clips from the movies, and live singing. It's playing at the Orpheum on March 28 and 29.
This This Friday, Playhouse on the Square will host their annual Curtain Up fundraiser, which is a five-parties-in-one event.
This year's theme is "Playhouse Loves Memphis" (Yeah!) and so naturally all the food, beer, and music will have a local flavor. Get your tickets online or call (901) 726-4656.
If you like wine or theatre or trivia, this event is for you. Next Tuesday, August 19, Playhouse on the Square is hosting the 8th annual Great Wine Performances at its midtown theatre from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. I'm giving away two tickets.
In the last few years, a lot has gone into turning Overton Square back into a fun place to hang out. Maybe you haven't been in a while. Maybe you go all the time, but always go to the same places and want to try something new. Either way, here's a guide to what's up with Overton Square now.
