How did I manage to go so many years without the Southern Meat Market?
The market, which has been open in the same location since 1903, doesn't look like much when you walk in, but it's a meat wonderland. Here's why:
Today in Memphis, St. Jude gets a big deal donor, Memphis gets more beer selection, a midtown corner gets a mystery redevelopment and D.J. Stephens gets birthday cake. Also, we all get closer to Christmas vacation.

As the year winds down, I've been looking back over old posts, trying to figure out where the time has gone. I've realized that in 2012, a lot of my time was spent eating.
I know there aren't really any vegetables on this list, and that's not a purposeful omission. I very much like vegetables, but 2012 seemed to be a year of bacon. Delicious, tasty bacon.

1. Queen of Memphis Jookin Competition, Center for Southern Folklore, 6 p.m., $10
Jookin is a Memphis art form, and tonight, female dancers from all over the city will compete at the Center for Southern Folklore to determine who's got the best moves.
It's hard to miss Marlowe's. You drive south on Elvis Presley Blvd., past Graceland, through a few lights, and boom, there it is on the right side of the street, a gleaming barbecue beacon, bathed in pink light.

Also, before we get to the set list, I want to give a quick birthday shout out to my parents, Kim and Larry. They have the same birthday (same day, same year) and that day is today. So, happy birthday, mom and dad!
