Tacos and Craft Cocktails at El Mero Mezcaleria

Move over, margaritas!

This summer, I had the pleasure of celebrating the reveal of El Mero Taco's new cocktail bar. In partnership with cocktail consultants Pour Taste, El Mero’s brand-new bar hosts the area's largest library of agave spirits and the Mid-South's first Mezcaleria.

From Taco Truck To Mezcaleria

For years, Memphians have loved the Southern-Mexican fusion tacos, street corn, and queso from El Mero Taco food truck. The owners Jacob and Clarissa Dries have explained that "Our menu, like our family, is a mix of two cultures, Mexican and Southern American."

The family-owned business began as a food truck, and in 2019 they opened the brick-and-mortar restaurant in Cordova near Macon and Germantown Parkway. COVID put a bit of damper in their plans, but during the closure they renovated the bar area and worked with Pour Taste to develop and curate an amazing new cocktail menu.

There are a ton of new cocktails to choose from, but my current favorite is the Destilado, made with rye, amaro, grapefruit, black pepper, cherry and Benedictine. The pour is strong, but drinks are still flavorful, which can sometimes be hard to achieve.

Kim's Taco Picks: Smoked Haberno Shrimp and Fried Chicken

I had THE best time chatting with their new Bar Manager Rachel while learning a little more about the history of cocktails (her knowledge is extensive and there’s so much more to just mixing a drink).

She also hipped me to the deliciousness that are their Southern Fried Chicken Tacos. I usually order their Smoked Habanero Shrimp Tacos because I love the spiciness, but the Fried Chicken Tacos are a game changer.

If you're vegan, they are able to rework their Veggie Taco to accommodate you, and their salsa and guacamole are vegan approved as well.

If you have a sweet tooth, the Churros (served with Mexican chocolate and salted caramel) are sure to please, but to be honest, you really can't go wrong with anything on their menu.

Their drink menu does change seasonally, so these drinks are just to give you an idea of what to expect when you visit El Mero in Cordova. Add this taco and drinks spot to your next night out with friends!
