Memphis Staycation: Exploring Hyatt Centric and Caption by Hyatt
The sister hotels may be connected but they both offer different experiences whether you want to relax or cut loose.
The sister hotels may be connected but they both offer different experiences whether you want to relax or cut loose.
Hyatt Centric and Caption are two of the newest hotels in Downtown Memphis, located right next door to each other right off of Beale Street. The two hotels are connected so you are free to walk between them both without having to step outside.
We went on staycations to each location to see what they’re all about and what they can offer locals for an experience. Tyra took on Caption and Jalyn Centric. Here’s what we thought of both:

I’ll admit– adult friendships can be tricky. Everyone is consumed with a busy schedule, whether it’s school, work, and everything in between. That’s where you can come to the rescue and block off a weekend for a much needed staycation with your crew.

A Trendy Meets Chic Hotel
We stayed at Caption by Hyatt Beale Street Memphis. It’s such a trendy meets chic hotel that smells like heaven. Upon arrival, you’re met with the friendliest staff that welcomes you with smiling faces. Caption is unlike typical hotels because as soon as you walk in you enter Talk Shop. I love coming here to catch up on work, grab a bite to eat (the Netta’s Chicken Sammy is SO good), and wash it down with a refreshing drink. That’s exactly what I did in the meantime, because my friends are never on time anywhere! Who else can relate? Something I also love about Talk Shop is the cute pineapple cup our drinks came in! You choose a spirit, flavors (blueberry, lemon, vanilla, etc.), and mixers (Jarritos pineapple soda, ginger beer, etc.) The possibilities are endless!
Let’s Talk About The Room
It feels like you step into another dimension when you walk in the room. The perfect amount of natural light, aesthetic color scheme, view of the river + bridge, and Memphis-focused bathroom wallpaper– I loved it all. There was a point in the night when we all agreed this is the vibe we want for our homes.

Make it a GNO, Or Don’t
Caption is located on Front Street in Downtown Memphis. It’s a block from all the fun spots on Main Street and 2 blocks from the liveliness of Beale Street. We freshened up and bar-hopped at some of our favorite spots. But sooner or later, the day caught up with us, so we made our way back to the room. The rest of the night was filled with laughs, card games, face masks, jammies, and a nostalgic movie acting as background noise as we caught each other up on life.

This Staycation at Caption was the perfect way to treat my friends to a change of scenery while catching up and spilling a little tea (hehe.)

Next Door at Hyatt Centric Beale Street
Next Door at Hyatt Centric Beale Street
The location of both hotels being steps away from Beale Street is a huge motivator to stay here but you could easily find yourself never having to leave between the pool and rooftop bar (as was our case while doing a couples staycation here).
Our day at Hyatt Centric Beale Street started with a seamless check-in in the wide and spacious lobby. We quickly dropped off our stuff in the room (I’ll get more into the room later in the blog) because we were determined to hit the pool and soak up the perfect weather Memphis was having.

Soak up the Sun or Take a Dip
Soak up the Sun or Take a Dip
It was a Saturday afternoon and the pool was bumping. The cabanas were full of people having a good time and relaxing. I got the vibe that half of the people there were locals also there for a staycation. Two of the local groups were for birthdays and were staying downtown to celebrate.
The pool is great and in addition to the cabanas, there are plenty of lounge chairs surrounding it. We had a cooler of drinks (thanks Hyatt!) to cool off poolside with. Guests can also hit the downstairs bar and order cocktails or beer to sip on.
After spending several hours relaxing at the pool, we went back up to our room to get ready for dinner and drinks at the rooftop Beck & Call.

Nods to Memphis in Centric Rooms
Nods to Memphis in Centric Rooms
Our room faced Beale Street giving us a view of the river and Mud Island. I would describe the rooms at Centric as modern and sleek with pops of yellow and nods to Memphis. The first nod being the wallpaper over the bed that pays homage to the history of the location – formerly Wm C. Ellis & Sons.
The glass shower is wrapped with Memphis buzz words from Jookin and Soul Burger to landmarks like Orange Mound and the Brooks Museum. I imagine new visitors to Memphis could plan their itineraries off the walls alone.
My absolute favorite part of the room was the motion sensored lights under the bed. So if you had to get up in the middle of the night, you can do so without fumbling around in the dark.

Beck & Call Rooftop Bar
Beck & Call Rooftop Bar
I’ve been to Beck & Call previously but this was my first time sitting in a booth and eating. I’ve always been impressed with the sophisticated design of the interior and exterior of this space. My favorite touch is the large photos of Memphis-connected artists like Yo Gotti, Justin Timberlake, Tina Turner, and Valerie June.
The rooftop portion itself is the best in the city with its wrap around view of the Mississippi River and Beale Street. I love the view of the bridge but I’m also a huge fan of going to the Beale Street side to kick it by a fire pit.
When we got up to the rooftop around 8:30 p.m. it was already full of people. We settled in and perused the menu for cocktails. Fair warning, it did take quite some time to order drinks. Pack your patience but the good news is the rooftop is amping up their staff and they were in the process of hiring for a lot of positions. I’d recommend visiting earlier to avoid crowds around 5-7 p.m – perfect for soaking in a sunset view!
We tasted our way through their cocktail menu and I know I'd mixed up the names of which one was which but I’d recommend them all. The perfect photo op cocktail is I *believe* the Raspberry Elderflower Collins which is purple and glittery.

The menu at Beck & Call is more of small plates vs. entrees. We were starving at this point, so we opted to order one of everything: charcuterie board, waffle fries, calamari, sandwich sliders, and lamb chops. The sliders and lamb chops were our favorites.
The whole time we were there music was playing inside and a DJ was holding down the rooftop outside. By now, we were tired from the food and sunshine early, so we headed back to the room to get some sleep. The bed was comfy and I slept peacefully through the night. There was no bleed through from the outside despite being close to Beale.

Breakfast at Talk Shop
Breakfast at Talk Shop
For breakfast, we went over to Talk Shop inside Caption. The restaurant portion of CIMAS is currently closed. At Talk Shop, the pimento biscuit sandwich is a MUST GET. That was by far our favorite meal item of the weekend. I also recommend the avocado toast. They add radishes to it and it honestly works so well together.
Talk Shop is open for anyone and is a perfect space to work or meet with friends. Take advantage of the beer garden this fall too.
FYI -- For parking at both locations, you can use their valet or there are two parking garages directly across the street (MLGW’s and the brand new Mobility Center).
