Experience a Staycation at Southland Casino

If you haven’t been to Southland Casino lately – you’re in for a pleasant surprise and completely new experience.

I recently did a staycation at Southland Casino staying at their new hotel. It was also my first time seeing the newly renovated and redesigned casino floor.

Even better - it was during their “House Party” entertainment night celebrating the one year anniversary of the remodel. Southland has a DJ stage and routinely offers live music which is great for people who maybe are not the most interested in gambling – more on that later. FYI - the next House Party is on May 27!

Let me preface by saying that I am not the biggest gambler nor a huge fan of it. The thought of spending money and testing the fates gives me anxiety. Whether you fall in the same category or not - Southland has a lot to offer beyond the slots and tables.

To do a quick sum up - I had a lot of fun this night.

First Up - Stay in Style

Southland may just be across the Mississippi River, but in a true staycation style, you can experience the casino, new hotel rooms, and all the other amenities it has to offer. I highly recommend going on a Friday night for their live music. Dance and enjoy some cocktails and crash for the night just steps away from the casino floor.

I’m all about taking any drinking and driving out of the occasion so if you're planning to have a good time out - get the room.

The hotel itself stretches 20 floors offering 300 rooms with 12 penthouse suites. The plush red carpet in each room is very on brand with the casino style. I did enjoy the big sized bed watching Degrassi way too late after enjoying the casino floor.

House Parties at Southland

Normally, I’d probably jump next to talking about the gaming or food scene but I have to talk about the entertainment first. Like I said, we had a good time.

We were lucky enough to be there the same night they had Kid Capri (a pioneer in DJ culture. The guy is a legend) at the DJ booth in the Chairman’s Bar area. The mix was hitting and he had the dance floor packed. Kid Capri was actually supposed to be high up on their DJ stage but he wanted to be closer to the people and stayed on the floor.

I had so much fun dancing and singing to largely Y2K hits that I forgot that we were on the casino floor.

Anyone who hasn’t visited recently will be in for a big surprise when it comes to the new casino floor. It’s well-done and expansive with a fun vibe. The best part - no smoking. No insult intended to those that do.

Smoking is allowed in the Sports Bar & Grill (where the Sportsbook is) which was kind of a bummer because I was hoping to watch some of the playoffs there but I wanted to avoid the smokiness of it. That area also has an assortment of casino games too.

The casino offers more than 2,400 slot machines and 50 live table games. If table games are more your style, you'll find everything from blackjack to roulette to craps.

Okay this is REAL inside casino talk but as a child of parent’s who love their casino experiences I am well acquainted with The Buffalo Range games. I can’t understand or explain why but they are very popular. Southland Casino has the largest collection of Buffalo games in the Mid-South. There’s even a giant Buffalo to complete the collection.

Spoiler: With $50 in slots credits - I did not walk away a winner but I was able to stretch every dollar for about an hour of play.

Dining and Drink Options at Southland

Casinos are always popular for their buffets and I can definitely get down for a good casino buffet. Southland offers eight dining and drink options - including a buffet!

I loved the buffet (the made-to-order pasta bar and hush puppies were some of my faves). The new 400-foot buffet offers over 100 dishes daily. It also comes with a cocktail! All-you-can-eat crab legs are always a buffet hit. Southland offers it on Friday nights and all day Saturday. The buffet price is $54.99. Check out the daily hours and meal themes here.

I had dinner at the Ignite Steakhouse – the casino’s upscale steakhouse with a farm-to-table focus. The highlights of my meal were the crab cakes and the 40 oz (!!!) cut of Tomahawk steak. I opted to add the bourbon butter to it and it was delicious (only $3 - seriously get it.) I also added the crab oscar which took the steak to another level. I also loved my Charred Oak Old Fashioned.

You have to hit the Charred Oak Bourbon Bar after dinner too. Cool vibes and more delicious cocktails.

Other dining options ta Southland includes: The Fry House (Southern-fried homestyle), The Grind (coffee and pastries) and Seasons Cafe (breakfast with an overnight late night menu on the weekends).

You can check out all the options plus the menus at each here.

I have to end this by saying I was so blown away by the sheer kindness and joy by all of the employees at Southland. Every single person was in such a good mood and constantly made me laugh. I don’t know that I’ve ever noticed that anywhere as much as I did at Southland.

Build your perfect Memphis meal:

I love to eat so if I were to have only one meal left.. I’m going all out. I’d start with an app of Gumbo Fries from Blue City Cafe or Bayou Fries from Chef Tam, wings from Good Fortune or Central’s (honey gold and Jamaican Jerk), potato salad from Fat Larry’s, side of bbq spaghetti from Bar-B-Q Shop, and fried okra from Soul Fish. All paired with a Beale Street Brewing Space Age Sippin’.

Your most memorable Memphis moment:

College GameDay on Beale Street. That was an electric and perfect morning. I was still working in news then and was able to take it in up close and on the stage at some points. The fun and joy of everyone down there that morning is unbeatable.
