The Southern Heritage Classic is one of the premier HBCU matchups in the nation, boasting a 35-year legacy of celebrating and elevating HBCU sports. This rich history is now showcased in a new exhibit at the National Civil Rights Museum.

Titled The Southern Heritage Classic: Celebrating 35 Years of an HBCU Memphis Tradition, the exhibit opens on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, and will run through February 28, 2025.

The exhibit highlights the journey of the Southern Heritage Classic and its founder, Fred Jones Jr. Held annually in September, the Classic traditionally features two HBCU teams facing off at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.

For most of its 35-year history, the game has featured a storied rivalry between Tennessee State University and Jackson State University. Since 2023, Tennessee State has competed against the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. In total, five HBCU teams have participated in the Classic, and all are represented in the exhibit.

This year’s matchup is set for September 14 with always a wraparound series of events from concerts, competitions, parades and more. Don't miss the full lineup!

The display features more than 120 artifacts from Jones' personal collection, alongside archived footage of games, Battle of the Bands performances, and tailgating scenes which is a joy to watch at the exhibit.

According to the National Civil Rights Museum, “this exhibition explores the origins of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in America, their connection to the Civil Rights Movement, the rise of Black athleticism, and the Classic Weekend events that showcase the rich culture unique to Memphis.”

The exhibit was curated by Associated Curator Ryan Jones and is the first exhibit to feature the Classic at the museum.

Build your perfect Memphis meal:

I love to eat so if I were to have only one meal left.. I’m going all out. I’d start with an app of Gumbo Fries from Blue City Cafe or Bayou Fries from Chef Tam, wings from Good Fortune or Central’s (honey gold and Jamaican Jerk), potato salad from Fat Larry’s, side of bbq spaghetti from Bar-B-Q Shop, and fried okra from Soul Fish. All paired with a Beale Street Brewing Space Age Sippin’.

Your most memorable Memphis moment:

College GameDay on Beale Street. That was an electric and perfect morning. I was still working in news then and was able to take it in up close and on the stage at some points. The fun and joy of everyone down there that morning is unbeatable.
