Shop Local: Terra Cotta Plant Shop and Apothecary

Shop local at this Black woman owned plant shop!

If you’ve been looking for a new spot to find a few plant babies for your home while also supporting local, think about visiting Terra Cotta, a Black-owned, women-owned nursery and apothecary tucked away on Summer Ave near The Broad Avenue Arts District.

In addition to their plant offerings, owners Keneisha Malone & Meghan Paige also host plant care and potting workshops in addition to yoga classes with The Yoga Kickback (https://www.instagram.com/theyogakickback/) to help foster a deeper sense of community while focusing on health and wellness.

Terra Cotta will be celebrating two years of business this October,  and I recently popped in to meet the owners and learn more about their inspiration behind the business

Memphis Plant Shop and Apothecary

Why Summer Avenue for your first location?

Honestly, our space on Summer Avenue is what we could afford. We started Terra Cotta with very little and decided we didn’t want to use loans to start. We spent some time driving around Memphis calling retail spaces, and this is the first place where the rent worked for us.

What do you feel makes Terra Cotta different from other plant/floral shops?

In addition to the plants, we really work to build community. Our business model was set up to ensure other Black and local creatives have a platform and a space to thrive. We also center our calendar around people gathering. We enjoy bringing people together.

Does Terra Cotta offer classes or any additional education for those that may not know much about plants/have black thumbs?

We do! We have a regular yoga schedule with The Yoga Kickback. She offers a class in our store every week called the Sunday Soul Kickback. We have a workshop series called Earthing, and we’re currently offering a plant basics class called Earthing 101.

What’s your favorite part about owning this business?

Meghan: My favorite thing about owning the business is meeting new people and expanding my community!

Keneisha: I like connecting with people that come into the store. I also just really like being able to be creative in the space.

Any special events or workshops coming up?

Yes, we have a few things coming up. We’ll be at the Athleta at Saddle Creek on August 21st at 10 a.m. for a Kemetic Yoga and wellness event. You can find our full calendar on our Instagram.
