Shop Local: Golden Hour

Being a plant mama is not in my DNA (I once accidentally killed a plant because I thought that it was fake, so fresh flowers only for me!), but I’ve always been fascinated by the people that are.

When Amy McPherson and Kylie McKay opened Golden Hour in October 2020, it instantly became a hit with all of the plant lovers in my life, not only because of their botanical offerings, but also because of the cool, slightly bohemian aesthetic of the shop. The cute little “plant babies” that people were able to get from the locally owned, women-owned shop became a welcomed reprieve from the mundane daily experiences due to Covid.

Located in a gorgeous space right next door to Comeback Coffee, Golden Hour also offers cute home decor accessories, candles and other gifts in addition to plants. I recently popped in to meet the owners and learn more about their inspiration behind it.

Q&A With Golden Hour Owners Amy McPherson And Kylie McKay

Why the Pinch District for your first location?

We are no stranger to the Pinch - Amy and her husband Hayes own Comeback Coffee next door, and Kylie joined the Comeback team as a barista for a year before opening Golden Hour. We love the history of the Pinch and have big dreams for what it will become as it is further revitalized in the years to come. It’s been a quiet stretch of Main for many years, but we are so inspired by its history as a center of commerce in Memphis’ early years, and are proud to be a part of bringing people back to the district.

What do you feel makes Golden Hour different from other plant/ floral shops?

We wanted to create a space that felt like a home, showing our shoppers how to incorporate plants into their homes in ways that a traditional nursery cannot. We are constantly seeking out new growers to keep hard-to-find and unique plants in stock, and offer a really personal shopping experience by showing shoppers plants that will fit their needs and teaching them how to care for them properly. We focus on small businesses and independent makers for most of our other merchandise, offering shoppers candles, home goods, and stationery that they won’t find elsewhere in town.

Does Golden Hour offer any classes or any additional education for those that may not know much about plants/have black thumbs?

Classes are something we are planning to do in the future! We haven’t been able to yet due to space and COVID, but that is in the works. We do work hard to educate our customers in other ways, talking over care and issues in the store and via social media. We always encourage our customers to reach out if they have plant care questions, and are happy to help customers choose plants that will be suitable for their environment and plant knowledge level.

What’s your favorite part about owning this business?

We have loved getting connected to our community in new ways in Memphis. We have had the opportunity to meet and build relationships with so many cool people, which has been so exciting. We also have been able to hire two full-time employees since opening, which is such a privilege. We love that we have been able to create jobs in Memphis and build an incredible little team of very cool women.

How can people shop with you/keep up with what’s happening with the store?

Shop with us in store Tuesday-Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday 12pm-4pm, and keep up with what’s new on Instagram! We always post stories when we get new plants in, so it’s a great way to see what’s new in the store. @goldenhourmemphis
