No Passport Needed: How Cafe India Brings India to Memphis

“Two things you can’t fake: good food and music,” and there was no faking how good and fresh the food is at Cafe India.

Cafe India is an authentic Indian grill that specializes in traditional Indian cuisine, with something for everyone.

No meat? No problem! More spice? Spice it up a notch! Don’t know where to start? They even have a buffet-option!

One of my favorite things to do when I try out a new restaurant is to fully immerse myself in their space and get a taste of their culture: this is one of my favorite ways to travel to another part of the world without ever having to leave Memphis.

At Cafe India you get to eat traditional Indian food and taste new spices, listen to Indian artists, sit next to murals of an Indian market and their skyline, and read impactful quotes from humanitarians we all know and love, including: Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa.

Now that you’ve got a feel for the restaurant, we’ve got to talk about the main course.

Let’s get into what we ordered, because I am still thinking about all of the different flavors we got to try: a mango lassi and a sweet lassi, vegetable samosas, butter chicken with white rice and garlic naan, and shrimp hakka noodles (an Indo-Chinese style of spicy noodles).

When trying a new restaurant, especially one rooted in rich culture, make sure you bring two things: an open mind and a big appetite.

If you allow yourself to be immersed in the restaurant, you too can travel, without having to leave Memphis.

But whatever you do..and I cannot emphasize this enough…don’t leave without ordering the butter chicken.

About the Author

Hi, Hii. I’m Carmen Monèt and I am a free-lance journalist from Memphis, TN. I’ve always had a love for storytelling and actually I used to say that I was providing a voice for the “voiceless;” but as I’ve grown as a writer I’m learning that we’ve always had a voice, we just didn’t have the platform to express ourselves.

So I listen a lot, but I also get to connect with people so much. My daughter Cabella is the best part of my entire life, and she has pushed me to actually follow my dreams of becoming a real writer. I hope that people are able to really feel the passion and vulnerability that I infuse in my writing, and be teleported into the story.
