New Music Video "The Rope" From Memphis Artist Don Lifted

Meet Memphian and artist Lawrence Matthews

Matthews, who goes by the moniker Don Lifted, shares his artistic talents with Memphis and beyond—artwork, poetry, music, community. Last week he released a new single and music video for the track “The Rope”, followed by a performance at SXSW

The music video is directed by Lawrence and his brother Martin Matthews and features haunting imagery of a figure constrained in literal (and vivid) fashion, of the artist stoically occupying their "seat at the table", figures struggling through a gray, foggy wilderness. The visuals are as compelling as the immersive song. I keep listening to this track on repeat.

With elements of indie hip hop, R&B, and rock, his music defies labels. It’s 2022 and we aren’t doing that anymore anyways. Lawerence’s provided bio has this sentence which hits like a splash of cold water to the face, so I just want to share that directly:

“Rather than bringing his work to a more accommodating locale, he instead worked to make Memphis more accommodating…”

He does this through work in public art and community building, including as a founding member of TONE HQ Black creative collective where he’s the Gallery Director.

Don Lifted’s third album 325i was recorded during the start of the pandemic in 2020 and released in October 2021 with Oxford-based Fat Possum Records. Hear it and his first two albums on bandcamp. Give him a follow on Instagram.
