For the first time ever, the MICHELIN Guide is coming to the South and several Memphis restaurants have earned the honor of being recognized.
The inaugural MICHELIN Guide American South was unveiled Monday night in Greenville, South Carolina, celebrating restaurants and chefs across the region.
Memphis standouts Felicia Suzanne’s, The Lobbyist, Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen, and Petals of a Peony were among those honored with a MICHELIN mention with Hog & Hominy earning a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand.
The new guide shines a spotlight on the South’s thriving culinary scene across six states, Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina, joining Atlanta’s pre-existing MICHELIN guide.
Being included in the MICHELIN Guide is one of the most prestigious achievements in the restaurant world. Anonymous MICHELIN inspectors, of various nationalities, secretly visited the establishments multiple times, evaluating them on five criteria: ingredient quality, mastery of flavor and technique, the chef’s personality in the cuisine, value for money, and consistency across visits.
There are a few levels of recognition within the guide:
- MICHELIN Stars are the highest honor, awarded to restaurants offering truly exceptional dining.
- The Bib Gourmand distinction highlights great food at a great value. Think of incredible meals that don’t require a special occasion.
- And a MICHELIN Guide mention (or “recommended” listing) means a restaurant impressed inspectors and is officially recognized for serving excellent food.
Even without a star, every restaurant featured in the guide has met MICHELIN’s world-renowned standards and earned its place among the South’s best.
The MICHELIN Guide American South was made possible through a partnership between Memphis Tourism, the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, and other southern tourism organizations.
