Shangri-La Records Presents Lo-Fi in Hi-Fi Season 2: Celebrating Memphis Hip-Hop

Get ready to turn up the volume and vibe out to the sounds of the city’s legendary hip-hop scene. Shangri-La Records is back with Lo-Fi in Hi-Fi: Season 2, and it’s all going down at B-Side in the Minglewood Hall complex starting this April.

If you missed the first season, let’s catch you up. Lo-Fi in Hi-Fi is a free monthly listening party put on by Shangri-La Records to honor classic Memphis rap albums from the ‘90s—think underground beats, raw lyricism, and that unmistakable Memphis sound.

Last year’s events were packed, with fans showing up in droves to hear from icons like Tommy Wright III, La Chat, Kingpin Skinny Pimp, and Gangsta Blac. This season, they’re kicking things up a notch, so bring your crew and get ready to relive the golden era of Memphis hip-hop.

What to Expect This Season

Shangri-La Records is celebrating the 30th anniversary of 1995, a pivotal year in Memphis hip-hop. Each month, from April through September, they’ll spotlight a different game-changing album. You’ll hear the music, meet the artists and producers behind the tracks, and soak up stories from the era that helped put Memphis on the hip-hop map.

This year’s lineup includes iconic records from world-renowned legends like Three 6 Mafia and 8Ball & MJG, plus underground gems from artists like Lil Noid and Children of the Corn. Build your perfect Memphis meal:

I love to eat so if I were to have only one meal left.. I’m going all out. I’d start with an app of Gumbo Fries from Blue City Cafe or Bayou Fries from Chef Tam, wings from Good Fortune or Central’s (honey gold and Jamaican Jerk), potato salad from Fat Larry’s, side of bbq spaghetti from Bar-B-Q Shop, and fried okra from Soul Fish. All paired with a Beale Street Brewing Space Age Sippin’.

Your most memorable Memphis moment:

College GameDay on Beale Street. That was an electric and perfect morning. I was still working in news then and was able to take it in up close and on the stage at some points. The fun and joy of everyone down there that morning is unbeatable.
