For the uninitiated, the Indie Memphis Film Festival is our city’s standout film festival showcasing hundreds of films across a variety of genres. There is live music before films, opportunities to meet directors and cast members, and quite literally a film for every interest.

A few points of note:

  • This year’s festival runs from Nov. 14-17 at different venues near Overton Square.
  • Dozens of films will be screened. Check out the full list here.
  • Additional encore films will play at Malco Paradiso on Nov. 18-19
  • Many Memphis-based filmmakers will have works featured, and many filmmakers will be traveling from out of town

While there are dozens of great films that will be playing, here are few of note:

  • Nickel Boys, directed by RaMell Ross, is this year’s centerpiece film based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Colson Whitehead. I read this book a few years ago and it’s an extremely powerful story detailing the friendship between two young Black teenagers navigating a reform school together.
  • It Was All a Dream will be screened opening night. Directed by dream hampton, this is a visual memorial from hampton’s personal archives about the dawn of the golden era of hip hop.
  • Boys Go to Jupiter, directed by Julian Glander, is a coming-of-age story about a teenager in suburban Florida desperately hustling.
  • Flow, directed by Gints Zibalodies, follows a courageous cat, capybara, lemur, bird, and dog on a heartfelt journey after their homes are devastated by a flood, relying on visual storytelling with no dialogue.
  • Memoir of a Snail is a bittersweet claymation drama from Academy Award-winning animator Adam Elliot, showcasing 200 handmade characters, including the melancholic misfit Grace Pudel, voiced by Sarah Snook
  • There are seven featured documentaries, all with extremely powerful descriptions from a landmark sexual assault case in Japan, the first group of Black debutantes in Ohio, the fight against a toxic landfull, and more.
