Memphis may be famous for its BBQ, and for good reason – but the foodies will tell ya that the 901 is more than just one category of food, no matter how delicious. I’ve always found Indian food to be one of the most comforting meals you can eat, and that’s saying a lot coming from a Southern girl! The warm garlicky naans, crispy samosas, and aromatic curries have always drawn me in.
I had the privilege of bebopping around Memphis to try some of our many Indian treasures. So let’s get to it! We’re talkin’ curries, biryanis, vindaloos, and more!
Mayuri
6524 Quince Road
I’m not a vegetarian, but if I was, I think I could survive solely off of Mayuri’s eggplant coconut curry. It’s divine and one of my absolute favorite dishes in Memphis. Creamy, spicy, and aromatic, this curry is perfectly served over freshly steamed white rice or atop a soft and fluffy piece of naan. I have yet to find another local joint that serves anything quite like it, so I highly recommend getting it here! While I think this dish is their best, Mayuri has undoubtedly mastered beloved classics like butter chicken, tikka masala, and biryanis as well. Order extra naan – and thank me later!
Golden India
2097 Madison Aveneue
Feeling adventurous? Try Golden India’s spicy, savory, and always perfectly prepared lamb vindaloo. Golden India specializes in Northern Indian food right in the heart of Overton Square. The ambiance is cozy with white table cloths and dim lighting. One of the true highlights is the staff! They are so friendly and welcoming, never making you feel foolish for not knowing what something is on the menu and always willing to help you narrow down your choices!
India Palace
1720 Poplar Avenue
All of the cool midtowners go to India Palace, and here’s why you should too. They voted best Indian food in Memphis for 19 years in a row! Even though I’m not a cool midtowner, this restaurant is probably my favorite Indian spot to dine-in in the city. The menu says that “freshness and creativity” are their favorite ingredients and it shows as the meals are bursting with fresh, seasonal ingredients. The vegetarian and vegan samosas are the perfect starter. Crunchy, savory, filled with potatoes and peas, you’ll need more than one order for the table! My favorite dish here is the Coconut Chicken Korma. The Lamb Biryani is a close second… don’t make me choose!
A Taste of India
5030 Poplar Avenue
This East Memphis restaurant is relatively new, but oh so good. Conveniently located on Poplar Ave, they do a big take out business, but dining in is quite the treat, with Bali music playing and the sweetest family working the counter and kitchen. The food was undoubtedly some of the freshest I have had in the city. The portions were large and made for delicious leftovers! As cliche as it is, I highly recommend the butter chicken from here. If you’re overwhelmed with making a selection, try coming for lunch where they have a hot and fresh buffet!
Memphis Indian Restaurant
3561 Park Avenue
Nestled inside the Mediterranean Grocery Store on Park, this restaurant didn’t bother with any frills in choosing a name – and who cares when the food is this good! The name is straight to the point, just like the menu. There’s no doubt about authenticity here. You can smell the spices in the air as soon as you walk in. Be warned though: this place has a knack for making spicy dishes, and not like U.S. spicy; really spicy. If this isn’t your cup of tea, let them know to tone it down a bit for you; they’re accommodating!
Bombay House
1727 N Germantown Parkway
Bombay House is beloved by Memphians! Although they no longer offer a buffet , the restaurant is still open for lunch and dinner. I’ve always enjoyed good and attentive service when I visit. Unlike some other places, almost all of their entrees come with fresh rice. There is something about their rice that is just. so. good. It’s fluffy, fragrant, and piping hot every time! The portions are large and the naan bread is addicting. I tried Saag Paneer for the first time here and I love it now! (Who doesn;’t like some form of spinach and cheese- especially when you add all of the wonderful spices??) This hearty and filling vegetarian side dish is one that they have mastered!
Mantra Indian Grill
2095 Exeter Road
Located in Germantown, Mantra Indian Grill is a hub for delicious, aromatic food. Because people outside of the loop deserve rich, fresh tandooris too, right? I went out on a limb – a short limb, but nevertheless something “different” from the usual – and tried their take on Paneer Tikka Masala. Okay, so everyone loves a good Tikka Masala, but this one has PANEER! It’s a cubed Indian Cottage Cheese, usually grilled, and then submerged in delicious creamy tomato gravy. I can’t say enough good things about it. I also fell in love with their Chicken 65. This classic Indian dish is not as commonly ordered as some other favorites. If you’re interested in trying it, try it here.
