Healthier Memphis Gala advocates change for Memphis to "Thrive, not just Survive"

Lifedoc Health’s 2nd Annual Healthier Memphis Gala, on March 8, 2024, supports building healthier communities with equitable access to healthcare and preventing diabetes and obesity through healthcare and research.

The upcoming Healthier Memphis Gala, presented by Green Dot Public Schools Tennessee,  immediately piqued our interest due to its impressive culinary lineup featuring some of the best chefs in Memphis.

The menu, led by Dory’s Dave Krog, is a who’s who of the Memphis food scene from The Lobbyist’s Jimmy Gentry, Sunrise and 117 Prime’s Ryan Trimm, Erling Jensen, and more. We’ll include the full list at the bottom of this blog.

It’s not just the culinary prowess that sets this fundraising event apart but the work that it helps support.

Healthier Memphis Gala supports Lifedoc Health, a non-profit. Last year, the inaugural gala was dedicated to helping more than 8,000 Memphians without a medical home after the pandemic.

It helped LifeDoc Health move into their new multi-disciplinary facility to scale their organization's capacity to impact the diabetes and obesity epidemic that disproportionately is affecting our community.

This year’s gala, hosted at Memphis Botanic Garden, raises money for Lifedoc Health’s next initiative: to provide a transformative impact and lasting change to our communities through school based health centers.

In 2023, they were able to accomplish more than 4,400 visits through school-based health programs.

Currently, of the 20,000 patients LifeDoc health serves, 56 percent are children and adolescents. It has been their goal to reach these children earlier, before they develop obesity, prediabetes, or diabetes and impact the progression of cardiovascular disease in the community.

The hope is to be a healthcare safety net for those facing glaring limitations driven social determinants of health and that success of the program can serve as a sustainable and effective model that can be replicated by others across Tennessee.

Build your perfect Memphis meal:

I love to eat so if I were to have only one meal left.. I’m going all out. I’d start with an app of Gumbo Fries from Blue City Cafe or Bayou Fries from Chef Tam, wings from Good Fortune or Central’s (honey gold and Jamaican Jerk), potato salad from Fat Larry’s, side of bbq spaghetti from Bar-B-Q Shop, and fried okra from Soul Fish. All paired with a Beale Street Brewing Space Age Sippin’.

Your most memorable Memphis moment:

College GameDay on Beale Street. That was an electric and perfect morning. I was still working in news then and was able to take it in up close and on the stage at some points. The fun and joy of everyone down there that morning is unbeatable.
