Front Street Deli Reopens After Three Years

The famed delicatessen is back with a new look, menu, and owners.

Wednesday was the first time dishing out subs for one of the oldest delis in Memphis–Front Street Deli. Currently, Front Street Deli is open for lunch as they navigate a soft open approach. The plan is to introduce breakfast at a later time.

The new Front Street Deli is owned by Tony and Stephanie Westmoreland of Tandem Restaurant Partners.

The deli, which first opened in 1976, looks a lot different than when it closed in 2020. During the closure, the building that houses the deli on the first floor was completely renovated and gives a more modern look with large windows.

But long gone are all the Tom Cruise nods from photos covering the wall or his movies playing on a loop from the TV. The deli was featured in The Firm (1993) starring Tom Cruise and took on that identity prior to closing. Even the subs were Tom Cruise themed.

While the new look doesn’t have the same nods to the film, the menu honors the authenticity of the original space.

Front St. Deli Chef Ken Hooper has lots of plans for the menu which features one of his speciality uses of tomato bread. The menu features salads, gourmet hot dogs, subs, sandwiches, and a variety of sides such as potato salad and baked potato casserole.

For the first visit I went with the Jack & Lui sandwich made with that tomato bread, house smoked sliced turkey, and paprika mayo. All subs are available to order full-size or half and it comes with a side. I opted for the delicious mac & cheese.

The Italiano was also a huge hit for day one.

Build your perfect Memphis meal:

I love to eat so if I were to have only one meal left.. I’m going all out. I’d start with an app of Gumbo Fries from Blue City Cafe or Bayou Fries from Chef Tam, wings from Good Fortune or Central’s (honey gold and Jamaican Jerk), potato salad from Fat Larry’s, side of bbq spaghetti from Bar-B-Q Shop, and fried okra from Soul Fish. All paired with a Beale Street Brewing Space Age Sippin’.

Your most memorable Memphis moment:

College GameDay on Beale Street. That was an electric and perfect morning. I was still working in news then and was able to take it in up close and on the stage at some points. The fun and joy of everyone down there that morning is unbeatable.
