HAPPY HOUR ALERT! New Memphis Teachers’ Lounges are a casual and safe space for teachers to discuss pressing topics in today’s education landscape and grow together. New Memphis’s next free event is Tuesday, February 10, from 5:30–7:00pm at Habana Club Bar and Grill – free food and drinks provided!

Join New Memphis and Latino Memphis for this conversation, “Supporting Students in Times of Uncertainty.” As the current social and political climate continues to shift, many students are experiencing heightened stress and instability that directly affects their ability to learn and engage in school.

Local reporting from Chalkbeat (“Memphis ICE law enforcement surge brings fear, absences for students”) shows educators observing increased fear, distraction, and absences among Hispanic students following heightened law enforcement activity in the community, with one teacher reporting roughly 25% of students missing class on some days.

This Teachers’ Lounge will help educators better understand how uncertainty is showing up in schools, with particular attention to immigrant students, and explore what teachers can do to support students, foster a sense of safety, and help maintain focus and stability in the classroom.
