Downtown Restaurants to Check Out Before the Year Ends

As a newer downtown resident, I love the restaurant options I have either for a quick bite or a nice sit down dinner. Here is my must try list for downtown restaurants to check out before the year ends.

Green Beetle

Known for its tasty burgers, The Green Beetle brings bar food and tavern drinks together. As the oldest tavern in Memphis and located in the busy South Main Arts District, they have an extensive food menu and plenty of drink options. From loaded crispy tots to tasty sandwiches, you can’t go wrong at the Beetle. Stop by to watch the game or just grab a quick bite in this historic spot that's been serving Memphians since 1939.

Majestic Grille

Majestic Grille is housed in a beautifully restored 1913 movie theater and makes for the perfect date night spot. They still project classic films on the original screen during dinner service and the menu ranges from crowd-pleasing steaks and fresh seafood to seasonal specials. My favorites are the Herb & Lemon Roasted Half Chicken and their Cajun Chicken Eggrolls appetizer. Reservations are encouraged, especially on nights when the Orpheum or nearby theaters have performances.

Felicia Suzanne's

New to the South Main District, but not to Memphis, Felicia Suzanne's brings southern cooking in a new elevated experience. Because of their newest mention in the MICHELIN Guide, their menu is a site to see and (taste). It features rich flavors of the South made with locally sourced ingredients. I recommend starting with the classic fried green tomatoes or deviled eggs and then the shrimp and grits for your entree. Whether you're craving classic Southern comfort or a contemporary take, Felicia Suzanne’s is where Southern hospitality and exceptional cuisine come together.

Bardog Tavern

Bardog Tavern serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a two story space on Monroe Ave. Their casual, lively bar atmosphere pairs perfectly with great comfort food. It is perfect for a good time with friends and grabbing a late meal. My favorite for a late night bite is the “Mother Clucker” sandwich. They also have a few pastas on their menu which are exceptionally tasty.

Amelia Gene’s

Amelia Gene’s brings fine dining in a whole new way to Downtown Memphis. The menu is globally inspired but rooted in ingredient-focused cooking, with options ranging from handmade pasta to beautifully plated seafood. For the best experience, try their chef's tasting menu, a multi-course journey of their most creative dishes. This spot is perfect for special occasions, big celebrations, or when you just want to feel fancy.

Good Fortune

Another South Main favorite, Good Fortune serves ramen style bowls in a modern way. Fun fact: Guy Fieri featured them on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Their wings and crawfish dumplings are also a crowd favorite. They also have tasty ice cream mixed with unique flavors and ingredients, and always served in a fish-shaped cone. Plus the drinks are always flowing at Good Fortune. Try a unique cocktail or one of their Sake options for an end of dinner splurge.

The Lobbyist

Not only does The Lobbyist have unique food offerings, but they have one of the best patios Downtown. There is plenty of seating with tables and even an outdoor bar. Here's the big news: their corn mash was named one of the best dishes in America by The New York Times in 2024 and it absolutely lives up to the hype. Their happy hour compliments perfectly with their patio seating. Plus they were recently named as a MICHELIN Guide mention. Try this spot for a perfect girls' night out or a big celebration.

Belle Tavern

Tucked behind 117 Prime, Belle Tavern is one of downtown Memphis’s worse-kept secrets. Since opening in 2016, it’s built a loyal following with its rich whiskey selection and thoughtful cocktails, they keep things classy but comfortable. Their happy hour is one of the best downtown. Whether you're unwinding after work or hosting a private dinner in their intimate space, Belle Tavern has something for everyone.

Itta Bena

Named for the Mississippi Delta town where legendary B.B. King was born, Itta Bena embodies the charm and inspiration of fine southern dining. It is located in a romantic, dimly lit space perched above Beale Street (entered via a “secret” hallway or private entrance). The menu is “Contemporary Southern” featuring dishes like the she-crab soup and pan roasted herb chicken. Each dish is elevated and soulful. It’s perfect when you want to escape the bustle of Beale but still be in the heart of downtown

Catherine and Mary’s

Owned by legendary chefs Andy Ticer and Micheal Hudman, Catherine and Mary’s brings Tuscan cooking to a whole new level. From an expansive wine list to their menu of traditional and new riffs, the restaurant strives to create an experience that reminds guests of home while also serving them something new. My personal favorite is their rigatoni served with maw maw’s gravy. The fried mozzarella snack and the meatball plate are also standouts you won't want to miss.

Next time you take a trip downtown or are looking for a great spot for a night out, remember these go-to and unique spots only Memphis has to offer. Reminder, we just kept the list to a quick 10 but there are so many great spots to discover in downtown? Heading to any of these spots or other locations soon?
