The three exhibitions include “Southern/Modern: 1913-1955”, pieces from the 2023 Wilson Fellowship participants, and an interactive exhibition entitled “On Paper!”. All will be on view July 14 to Sept. 29.

“Southern/Modern: 1913-1955” | Organized by The Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina

On view in the Dixon’s main galleries.

It presents works from artists below the Mason-Dixon line and those outside the region whose artworks were heavily inspired by their visits down south. This exhibition explores geographic regions, time and place, race, family ties, and social struggles. It examines the roles that women and people of color played in the South, while providing a richer, more accurate depiction of the region than previously shown.

Visitors are welcome to attend a lecture by Dr. Jonathan Stuhlman — senior curator of the American Art Mint Museum who curated this exhibition — who will discuss the exhibition’s key themes and artists. The lecture is July 14 from 2-3 p.m., free and open to all.

“2023 Wilson Fellowship | Organized by Dixon Gallery and Gardens

On view in the Mallory/Wurtzburger galleries.

In partnership with the town of Wilson, Arkansas, Dixon Gallery and Gardens launched the Wilson Fellowship in 2023. This artistic residency program brings cultural activity to the Arkansas Delta. Piloting the program are the inaugural class of Fellows: Danny Broadway, Claire Hardy, Thad Lee, and John Rusky. From late spring to early winter in 2023, the fellows captured Wilson and its inhabitants through paintings, watercolors, and photographs as their environment changed and evolved.

“On Paper!” | Organized by Dixon Gallery and Gardens and sponsored by Sylvamo

On view in the interactive gallery

Paper has many uses, and “On Paper!” in Dixon’s interactive gallery showcases several. Whether used as material or a communication tool, this exhibition highlights the unique qualities and versatility of paper through various engaging displays.

Build your perfect Memphis meal:

I love to eat so if I were to have only one meal left.. I’m going all out. I’d start with an app of Gumbo Fries from Blue City Cafe or Bayou Fries from Chef Tam, wings from Good Fortune or Central’s (honey gold and Jamaican Jerk), potato salad from Fat Larry’s, side of bbq spaghetti from Bar-B-Q Shop, and fried okra from Soul Fish. All paired with a Beale Street Brewing Space Age Sippin’.

Your most memorable Memphis moment:

College GameDay on Beale Street. That was an electric and perfect morning. I was still working in news then and was able to take it in up close and on the stage at some points. The fun and joy of everyone down there that morning is unbeatable.
