Creating Community With: TappedIN 901

Here to close the gap between nightclubs and sitting at home and staring at your wall, TappedIN 901 brings a fresh perspective to the Memphis arts and culture scene. Three creatives have joined together to merge their areas of expertise to curate events that reach all sectors of the artistic community.

Alexander Phillips, Saint Crutcher, and Luther Speight are the co-founders of TappedIN 901, a creative hub that has become host to many locals’ favorite events lately. “Music, Art, Fashion” is their mantra. And they're only growing.

TappedIN 901 originally began when Saint was looking to put on a listening party that was just like every other listening party he’d put on in the past. Luther challenged him to expand on that idea. He wondered “How can you reach people that you don’t typically reach?” They pulled in journalist Jasmine McCraven (also known as Jazzy Lo), hired DJ Solo, and had artist Bishop Yates plasture his photos around the room and capture photos of Saint. The listening party turned into an entire event you didn't just to attend, it had to be experienced. What was originally expected to be a night they thought 50 people would show up to was a celebration that over 100 people came out for. Everything from that point on seemed to bring itself together. They saw that people were craving a scene that was in partying and staying in. “We pride ourselves on filling that void of people who enjoy nightlife but don’t want to go to a club every weekend. They want to enjoy interactive experiences.” (Luther) They’ve even taken their events outside of Memphis, but no matter what they aim to elevate Memphis artists and the Memphis community.

A couple of their popular events include “The Hangout” where they featured local DJs and “For the Love of R&B” where they featured local R&B artists. Both of these events were completely sold out! Their community is a true testament to their hard work and the environment they've curated.

Now, they are branching out beyond events. With a new space on South Main, they are creating TappedIN Studios at 804 S. Main St. This new studio space will be for new photographers and videographers who are looking for a place to start. Creatives who enter the space will find it equipped with backdrops, lighting, an editing studio and several helping hands. Alexander, who’s the photographer of the trio, will be guiding those who come into the space through the beginning steps. “We want to be able to set it up like a launching pad. You come in here and you may not necessarily know what you’re doing but you’ll leave here either knowing what you’re doing or knowing where you want to go with it.”

Saint wants it to be “An all around creative hub so if you need space, this is your home.”
