Carrying the Torch Through Memphis: Memphis Humane Society

This blog was written in collaboration with our friends at Campfire Collective

The Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County has been a compassionate force in the community since 1933, dedicated to rescuing and caring for animals in need. From offering medical care and rehabilitation to homeless animals to educating future animal advocates, their work is essential to preventing cruelty and promoting responsible pet ownership.

To learn more about the Humane Society’s impact, we spoke with Executive Director Ellen Zahariadis, who shared insights into their mission, how locals can get involved, and the organization’s goals for the future.

1.Tell us about the Humane Society: Why is the work you do important?

The Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County works tirelessly to save the lives of animals that have been injured, abused, and neglected. Our goal is to prevent animal cruelty and to enrich the human experience through animal companionship. Located in the heart of Shelby Farms Park, we shelter over 800 animals each year and adopt out almost all of them. We also offer programming that helps keep pets in loving homes, including a free pet food pantry,  affordable dog training, and a Low-Cost Community Vet Clinic for pet owners on government assistance.

Educational initiatives include summer camp for ages 8-12 and vet tech workshops for older teens interested in a career as a veterinarian.

2. How can Memphians get involved with your organization or volunteer?

We’re always in need of volunteers. To get started, please visit www.memphishumane.org and click on the Volunteer tab to fill out the application. We’re looking for dog walkers, cat caretakers, administrative help, event support, and more. If you’d like to bring a group of volunteers, you can email [email protected]. Volunteers must be 18 or older.

3. What are some big events or fundraisers that the Humane Society has annually, and how can people contribute?

We have two major events each year that help us fundraise and connect with the community.

The Fast and the Furriest 5k will be held on March 15, 2025. This is one of our biggest fundraisers with an estimated 800 runners and walkers. It’s one of the few races that lets you run with your dog, which is always a big draw! Registration is open on our website.

On September 27, 2025, we’ll host the Paw Prints Party on the grounds of the Humane Society. This gala is our most important fundraiser of the year, drawing about 300 guests. Attendees enjoy a buffet, open bar, music, live and silent auctions, tours of our building, and the chance to meet some of our shelter cats and dogs. Tickets will be available in July, and we’re also looking for donations of art, jewelry, wine, gift baskets, gift cards, and more for our silent auction.

4. Tell us about your organization’s dreams and goals for the short-term and long-term. What does success look like for the Humane Society?

One of our primary goals is to keep pets in loving homes as much as possible through the pet food pantry, training lessons, and affordable vet care. We’re also focused on reducing the number of unwanted pets on the streets and in shelters through affordable spay/neuter surgeries.

Success would mean more adoptions each year and fewer surrender requests. In 2024, we received nearly 5,000 surrender requests, which is up almost 30% from last year. We also hope to see a reduction in contagious diseases like rabies through our vaccination clinics.

5. Tell us a little about you: How did you personally get involved with this organization?

I grew up with rescue dogs, so the mission of the Humane Society is very personal to me. I jumped at the opportunity to be Executive Director when my family relocated to Memphis from Birmingham six years ago. I believe that the way we treat animals reflects the heart of our community, and that people’s lives are so much better with animal companionship.

The Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County is always looking for new supporters, whether you’re interested in volunteering, attending an event, or donating. Every small effort makes a big difference in helping Memphis’ animals find safety, love, and a forever home!
