Best Spots to Order Salads in Memphis
This article was written by team members at Campfire Collective in collaboration with I Love Memphis.
Summer is the very best time of year for fresh, delicious veggies – and what better way to enjoy them than in a healthy salad? It is hard to pick a favorite, but the team at Campfire Collective is always up for a challenge and we gleefully munched our way across Memphis to compile this (partial!) list of some of the best salads in Memphis.
Did we miss one? Let us know your favorite salad spots and you may just see us there!
We do love a good Caesar, and we are spoiled for choice in Memphis. Get it with fish or chicken for a heartier meal.
Char: Blackened Chicken Caesar Salad
Char is not just one of the best steakhouses in town! You’ll find a delectable Caesar on the menu, topped with garlic-crusted croutons. The blackened chicken has just enough heat to add flavor, but it is not too spicy for sensitive palates. Char was recently recognized for its outstanding wine selection, so you are sure to find a good beverage to go along with your salad.
Half Shell: Salmon Caesar
Simple, yet delicious – you can’t go wrong with this classic. The Caesar at Half Shell combines fresh, crunchy Romaine with house made dressing, garlic croutons, and Parmesan cheese. We like to add salmon or chicken to make it a meal – but it’s a lovely starter and goes wonderfully with one of Half Shell’s famous catfish, seafood, or steak dinners.
Side Street Grill: Salmon Caesar Salad
Another top-notch choice for your traditional Caesar, paired with perfectly cooked grilled or blackened salmon. You can also try it with grilled, buffalo, or jerk chicken. Flavorful and good for you – you can’t beat that combo. And if you want to try it with one of Side Street’s signature martinis or specialty cocktails, we won’t tell!
Knifebird: Kale Caesar
A big delightful salad at a wine bar? Yes, indeed! The Kale Caesar at Knifebird packs a healthy punch. Crunchy kale is paired with cannellini beans, dried cranberries, and crushed almonds, tossed in a flavorful vegan dressing. The knowledgeable staff can help you select a nice white, rose, or even a light red to accompany your meal.
You may have caught on that we love salmon with our salads. Not only is it a good source of protein, this tasty treat is bursting with potassium, iron, and Vitamin D. Here are a few of our favorites that go well with fish.
Wolf River Brisket Co.: Salmon & Brussels
Chock-full of nutrition, the Salmon & Brussels Salad at Wolf River Brisket has it all. This flavorful dish combines a smoked filet of salmon on a bed of kale and Brussel sprouts, topped with bacon and freshly grated Parmesan. Slivered almonds add a nice crunch and dried cranberries add a pop of color and Vitamin C.
Bog & Barley: Butter Lettuce Salad with Salmon
One of Memphis’ newest restaurants captured the attention of this salad-loving team! Bog & Barley brings a taste of Ireland to the Bluff City, and we are here for it. The Butter Lettuce Salad is a delicate combination of tender greens, crisp haricot verts, herbs, and cherry tomatoes, tossed with a savory Irish mustard-shallot vinaigrette. Top it with salmon or chicken or pair it with a traditional Irish pub meal of fish and chips, bangers and mash, or shepherd’s pie.
Huey’s: Tossed Salad with Salmon, Avocado, and Egg
Justifiably famous for their burgers, Huey’s has a crisp house salad that satisfies our need for lighter fare. Garden fresh greens, juicy grape tomatoes, and refreshing cucumbers make this one of our go-to salads. We add Huey’s perfectly-cooked salmon, avocado, and hard-boiled egg for a heartier lunch or dinner.
If you’d prefer tuna, we have a great suggestion!
Char: Ginger-Peanut Salad with Tuna
Char has an awesome Ginger-Peanut Salad with Chicken, but we like to be different. We recommend subbing tuna for this Asian-inspired dish. The succulent, mild tuna adds a wonderful taste to the delicate baby greens, carrots, and cucumbers. Salted peanuts add sweet-and-savory crunch, while the cilantro, scallions, toasted sesame seeds, and ginger-peanut dressing notch up the flavor.
And, of course, chicken is a lovely addition to almost any salad. Tender and moist, chicken adds protein and bite while blending well with most flavors.
Chicken Salad Chick: Classic Salad with Olivia’s Old South Chicken Salad
Made fresh daily, the salads at Chicken Salad Chick are a lunchtime staple for us. We love the classic pairing of good, fresh greens with Southern-style chicken salad. The Classic Salad combines a spring lettuce blend with the pop of grape tomatoes and cucumbers. Top it with Olivia’s Old South, a traditional combo with sweet pickles and hard-boiled eggs. Yum!
City Silo & Pantry: El Goodo Bowl with Chicken
If you are craving clean food, you can’t go wrong with any of the tasty menu items at City Silo & Pantry. While it is not technically a salad, the El Goodo Bowl is every bit as good as the name implies. Wholesome and absolutely delicious, this hearty mainstay has it all: avocado, serrano peppers, yellow onion, black and kidney beans, roasted sweet potatoes, kale, sweet corn, grilled red onions, and bell peppers. Lemon, Pico de Gallo, garlic, and cilantro amp up the taste. This is another entry that stands well by itself, but for a more filling meal, add chicken!
Soul Fish Café: Southwest Chicken Salad
We love discovering delicious salads in unexpected places! Soul Fish Café is a Memphis mainstay for catfish, Southern-style veggies, and tacos – but the Southwest Chicken Salad keeps us coming back for more. This colorful option combines mixed greens, black beans, and corn with cheddar cheese, Pico de Gallo, and guacamole. It is served with homemade croutons and a zesty chipotle ranch dressing. We like the blackened chicken, but you can also choose blackened salmon, shrimp, or catfish.
Venice Kitchen: Thai Chicken Salad
The Thai Chicken Salad at Venice Kitchen is another Asian-infused crowd pleaser. Fresh mixed greens make a satisfying base. Nutrient-rich edamame, carrots, and purple cabbage bring the flavor, along with a burst of Vitamin C from Mandarin oranges and a fun crunch from crispy Chow Mein. Tossed with a honey peanut butter vinaigrette, this is a stick-to-your-ribs lunch or dinner.
Venice Kitchen: Walnut Grove
Venice Kitchen offers another of our mealtime favorites, the Walnut Grove salad. Grilled chicken, crisp greens, red onion, and roasted red pepper are tossed with cranberry and candied walnuts for a tart-and-sweet spark. Goat cheese adds a creamy touch and the blush wine vinaigrette ties the ingredients together.
Memphis offers a great variety of restaurants that boast seriously delicious salads on their menus. From Caesar to Southwest, you are sure to find the leafy greens that tempt your taste buds. We hope you enjoy sampling these healthy concoctions as much as we did!
