10 Ways To Love and Serve Memphis In September: Volunteer Ideas

Volunteer Odyssey has put together this list of local groups that need your help this month. 

As we step into fall and catch our breath, consider giving some of your time to our local nonprofits working to educate, feed, and house our neighbors.

1. Levitt Shell Fall Season Volunteers, September 17th and 18th (every Friday and Saturday through Oct. 22nd) with shifts throughout the evenings

Join the Levitt Shell in Overton Park as a volunteer in our 12th Fall season of free music in Memphis! They are thrilled to be bringing free music back to the Shell again. There are multiple volunteer opportunities Friday and Saturday of each week. Help us make it happen by volunteering your time & talents. Become part of the Levitt Shell Family and join us on a mission of community and music!

2. MENTOR Memphis Grizzlies, New Mentor Training, September 18th from 10:00 to 12:00

MENTOR Memphis Grizzlies' Training Institute provides best-in-class training to mentors and mentor programs so that they are equipped to improve student outcomes. This new mentor training starts the process to prepare mentors with the needed tools and skills to mentor and work with the youth within our youth mentoring network. This training is open to anyone interested in becoming a volunteer youth mentor. After completing training, MENTOR Memphis Grizzlies will connect you to a quality youth mentoring program.

3. Cooper-Young Farmers Market at the Cooper-Young Festival, September 18th from 9:00-12:00, 12:00-4:00, and 4:00-7:00.

You can represent the Cooper-Young Farmers Market at the Cooper-Young Festival by helping run their booth. This is a great opportunity to support the CYFM and local organizations and help increase awareness of local foods and farm to table eating. Sign up here!

4. Memphis Tilth, Garden Volunteer for New Sardis Garden, September 21st from 8:00 to 11:00

Join Memphis Tilth as they help supply garden volunteers to the New Sardis Baptist Church community garden. Situated in the field behind their church, this garden serves as a volunteer opportunity and learning tool for church and community members. Join the garden as they prep the beds for winter. Sign up here!

5. Catholic Charities of West TN, Food Box Packing, September 21st from 1:00 to 3:00 (repeats every Tues and Thurs)

Catholic Charities is working out of their Community Support Center putting together food boxes for families in need! This is a fun and fast paced volunteer shift. These boxes are then distributed for their weekly mobile food pantries, serving anyone in need of food. Sign up here!

7. Habitat for Humanity ReStore, September 23rd from 10:00-12:00, 12:00-2:00, and 2:00-4:00 (Repeats Tues through Sat)

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore serves as a daily fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis- with all of the proceeds going toward their vision of providing decent housing for all. They need volunteers to assist in their warehouse with sorting donations, unpacking shipments, stocking the floor and more.

8. Catholic Charities of West TN, Mobile Food Pantry, September 27th from 8:30 to 11:00

CCWTN is working outside serving boxes of food in their mobile food distribution. They need volunteers to help direct traffic, invite people to come through the line, take down customer information, and distribute this food to neighbors in need. This is a critical need with dozens of boxes given out daily. Volunteers are needed now more than ever!

9. Memphis Animal Services, September 28th with opportunities throughout the day

Memphis Animal Services offers a wide range of programs & services; including the sheltering of lost and homeless animals, pet adoption and placement, public information/humane education, and more. They need volunteers daily to assist with everything from driving medicine to local vets to taking pictures of animals for their adoption profiles. If you are interested in working with animals, MAS has a spot for you!

10. City of Memphis, A Taste of Memphis 2021, September 30th with shifts throughout the day

On Thursday, September 30th the City of Memphis is hosting neighborhoods, faith-based organizations, community development corporations (CDC's), and many others to come out and show support as being a part of this great event and great city! This year our theme is "Overcoming Obstacles Together."

A Taste of Memphis has served as a platform to share unique qualities and accomplishments about local neighborhoods and what indigenous leaders are doing to help make Memphis a better place on which to live, work, and play. We need volunteers to make this event a success! If you need service hours for school- this is a great opportunity to volunteer with the City of Memphis.
