365 Things to Do in Memphis #143: Walk with the Undead
Updated May 2018
Bring Out Yer Dead! Once a year, the undead rise and walk the streets of downtown, ready to feast on the brains of the unsuspecting as part of the annual Memphis Zombie Walk.
Assignment #143 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to put on some make up (or a duct tape X) and join the menacing horde.
The 11th annual Zombie Massacre is happening on Friday, May 25, 2018 on Beale Street and South Main. So, zombify yourself anyway you like (or put a duct tape X on your shirt to become a zombie victim), grab a canned food or money donation for the food bank, and head downtown.
Here's how it works: Everyone will meet up at Handy Park. If you get there early (around 3:30 p.m.), there will be event organizers on hand to help do your make-up. Note that the make up lines get long, so it's best to come already zombified if you can.
Kids are welcome and dogs are, too, as long as they're on leashes and you come prepared to clean up after them.
If you want to help out with applying makeup, loading donations, traffic control, or leading the walk, look for a Horde Herder in a yellow shirt at the event and tell them you want to help.
Tips
- wear something you don't mind getting messed up or stained
- come with at least some of your "look" completed to avoid lines to get zombie-fied
- BRING WATER and come hydrated, it's going to be sweaty
- if you want to be "attacked" wear a duct tape X (watch the video here for more info)
- be considerate of other zombies and non-zombies
- don't forget your donation
If you'd like to participate, but don't want to get made up, you can always get eaten. Just make a big duct tape X on your shoulder, wear clothes you don't care about and stand along the walk's route. Be patient, and I promise someone will come turn you into a zombie.
As always, it's free to participate in the Zombie Massacre, but the organizers will be accepting donations for the Mid-South Food Bank at the staging area.
