I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.

I have seen a number of shows but the one I remember most are taking my mother (who has since passed away) to see Les Miserables.  I also remember exactly where we were sitting when the chandelier came crashing down in Phantom!  And we were sitting front and center to see all of the dancing in Chorus Line.

My favorite show I've seen at the Orpheum isn't an actual stage production . It's the opening installment of this year's Summer Movie Series. It was Zombie Night and people came donning their scariest zombie costumes. As people filed in, an organist played creepy music. I enjoyed fresh popcorn, Jack and coke and a double feature complete with an intermission in a setting reminiscent of the guilded theaters of the golden age of Hollywood. It was truly a treat and one I which I got to see the Orpheum in a different, more relaxed light.

My favorite show at the Orpheum was "The Color Purple" back in 2010.  It was a pretty big production that went all across the nation and stopped in Memphis. The most memorable portion of the play to me was the lighting on the stage.  The background showing a sunny country field and setting sun.  The Lion King will be a great production! 65. Scott D. says:

I have so many memories of the Orpheum. When I was a teenager they were going to turn it into a parking lot but a really cool guy at my church founded Friends of the Orpheum to keep it going. Our church youth group volunteered to run concessions, clean up, usher – anything to keep the doors open. Eventually, it was renovated and "big ticket" shows started coming. I think the best one I saw there was Yul Brenner in The King and I. He gave us all autographed photos. I'm 50 years old, but it sure doesn't seem like that long ago. I'm just happy the Orpheum is still going strong.
