Drink This: Salt Lemonade from Shanghai
Today, I skipped my usual Shanghai Shake in favor of a cold cup of salt lemonade.
Salt lemonade has the same ingredients as regular lemonade, with one exception: the lemon juice comes from lemons that have been packed in salt and pickled. The result, which is slightly thicker and more neon brown in color than the lemonade you're used to, is a little sweet, a little tart and very, very salty.
Susan Ellis said that the taste reminded her of a margarita, minus the hooch. She's pretty dead on. I think it tastes like fermented whiskey sour mix (minus the whiskey). What is for sure is that the consistency makes it tough to drink quickly. After about 45 minutes, I've consumed about half an inch of it through very delicate little straw sips. It's not bad, but, like dirty gin martinis and tapioca pudding, I think it might be an acquired taste.
