Tonight's Plans: "Thunder Soul" at the Brooks Museum
One of the best documentaries of the past five years (at least, according to me) is showing at the Brooks Museum tonight, and you should be there.
Though "Thunder Soul" is set in Houston, Texas, it seems like it could easily be a Memphis story. After 35 years, the students from the legendary 1970s Kashmere High School Stage Band reunite to play one final concert for their ailing director and mentor.
But don't write it off as a "Mr. Holland's Opus"-style band nerd story. The Kashmere Stage Band played their signature soul and funk songs so well that you'll have a hard time believing that they were only in high school. Warning: bring a box of Kleenex - while the story is at turns funny and engaging, it's also a big, touching sobfest.
